The Osun State Government has established a committee to verify claims from victims of election-related violence as it prepares to begin the disbursement of a ₦500 million relief fund.
The committee was constituted by Governor Ademola Adeleke as part of efforts to ensure that people genuinely affected by election violence can access support from the state’s Election Violence Victims Relief Endowment Fund.
Speaker to Lead Verification of Victims’ Claims
The committee will be chaired by the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Olumide Egbedun, who will oversee the verification and assessment of claims submitted by individuals affected by election-related violence.
The state government said the verification process is intended to separate genuine claims from unfounded requests and ensure that the available funds reach those who actually suffered losses or harm.
Committee Members Named
Other members of the committee include Eniola Omotoso, Emmanuel Olowu, who represents civil society organisations, Alhaja Balkiss Akinleye, and a nominee of the Nigeria Police Force.
The committee is expected to review claims, assess the circumstances surrounding each case and determine eligible beneficiaries before the relief funds are distributed.
₦500 Million Fund Targeted at Election Violence Victims
The Election Violence Victims Relief Endowment Fund was created by the Osun State Government to provide assistance to people affected by election-related violence.
With the committee now in place, attention will turn to the verification process and the identification of genuine beneficiaries.
The initiative is expected to provide financial relief to affected residents while giving the state a structured process for handling claims linked to election violence.
