The Nigeria Police Force reportedly arrested former Imo State governor Rochas Okorocha on Monday night at the REIZ Continental Hotel in central Abuja over allegations of criminal conspiracy, forgery and impersonation.
According to the supplied report, a chief superintendent of police confirmed to television reporters that the former senator representing Imo West was interrogated for approximately one hour before being released on bail.
The reported arrest has brought renewed attention to a long-running dispute surrounding Okorocha’s 2023 All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial primary.
At the centre of the controversy is a disputed document that reportedly listed Okorocha as the winner with 150,780 votes, despite initial results indicating that his rival, an ally of Hope Uzodimma, had scored 230,464 votes.
The allegations of forgery and impersonation stem from questions about which document accurately represents the primary election results and which vote count should be recognised as authentic.
Okorocha has remained a prominent and controversial figure in Imo State politics since leaving office in 2019. The latest development has therefore reopened questions about how internal APC primary disputes were handled and whether the disagreements were adequately resolved before reaching the courts.
As of Tuesday morning, the supplied report indicated that no formal charges had been filed and that Okorocha had not issued a public statement responding to the allegations.
The case comes amid wider political and legal manoeuvring ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. Several disputes involving forgery, political candidacy and eligibility are reportedly active in the courts.
One separate case concerns an individual alleged to have falsely claimed the position of Director-General of the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC). According to the report, a Federal High Court struck out that case on the same day for jurisdictional reasons.
For Nigerian politics, the Okorocha matter highlights the continuing importance of transparent party primaries, reliable election documentation and due process in resolving disputes involving political officeholders.
The allegations remain subject to legal proceedings, and the former governor’s response, alongside any subsequent court filings, will be important in determining the next stage of the case.
