LAWMA Seals Markets and Plazas in Lagos Over Persistent Waste Violations
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has sealed several markets and plazas in the Ayobo area of Lagos State following repeated environmental violations and failure to comply with its directives.
The enforcement operation, carried out by the Authority’s Project WISE team in the Ikeja West District, forms part of ongoing efforts to tackle waste accumulation and curb indiscriminate dumping across the Ayobo-Ipaja axis.
Four Facilities Sealed in Ayobo
The affected facilities include Rock of Age Plaza, Ajerogun I Market, Ayobo Market and Oba Plaza, all located within the Ayobo area.
LAWMA Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the facilities were targeted after allegedly failing to comply with environmental regulations despite repeated directives from the Authority.
The enforcement was conducted alongside waste evacuation and environmental sanitation activities aimed at clearing accumulated refuse from major locations across the area.
LAWMA Steps Up Waste Evacuation Across Ayobo-Ipaja
As part of the intervention, LAWMA operational teams have been removing accumulated waste from several locations along the axis.
Areas affected by the cleanup include Oluwaga Bus Stop by Sawmill, the Ayobo Road median around Rainoil, Atan Nla by TCN, Ayobo Police Post and Megida Bus Stop, among other locations identified by the Authority.
The agency said the combination of waste evacuation, monitoring and enforcement is intended to prevent areas that have already been cleared from becoming dumping hotspots again.
Gbadegesin stressed that keeping the area clean would require more than government intervention, urging residents, traders, businesses and other waste generators to play their part by following approved waste disposal arrangements.
Residents and Businesses Urged to Use Approved Waste Channels
LAWMA also appealed to residents and businesses operating within the Ayobo-Ipaja axis to patronise their assigned Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators and ensure that waste is disposed of through approved channels.
The Authority warned that activities that undermine environmental sanitation efforts could lead to further enforcement against individuals, markets, plazas and other facilities found violating waste management regulations.
Gbadegesin reiterated that LAWMA would continue its monitoring and enforcement operations across the area as it works to restore and maintain cleaner surroundings.
The latest action signals a tougher approach toward facilities and businesses that repeatedly disregard environmental regulations, as the Authority seeks to prevent the return of waste black spots across Lagos.
