Police unveil special unit to tackle violent crime in Benue

To combat the rising number of violent crimes and insecurity throughout the state, the Benue State Police Command established the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU). Udeme Edet, the command’s public relations officer, made the announcement in Makurdi on Thursday.

Ms. Edet claims that the creation of the specialised section is consistent with the reforms that Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu is advocating.

According to her, the goal of the VCRU establishment and the revamping of the police tactical structure was to boost security operations in Benue and increase operational efficacy.

Ms. Edet also disclosed that Ifeanyi Emenari, the state’s commissioner of police, characterised the project as a significant approach intended to improve collaboration in the fight against violent crimes and confront new threats.

She stated that the restructure was implemented to promote a more disciplined, intelligence-led policing strategy, enhance accountability, and lessen duplication of jobs.

According to Mr. Emenari, the newly formed organization would serve as a central reaction unit for high-risk and emergency situations, enabling quicker personnel deployment and improved operational resource management. He emphasised that while doing their tasks, the unit’s officers must maintain professionalism and respect for human rights.

“The selected officers have begun an intensive training program focused on contemporary law enforcement techniques, ethical conduct, and tactical response as part of the rollout,” he told reporters.

“It is anticipated that the training will improve their ability to effectively respond to security challenges within the state.”

In order to ensure peace and safety throughout Benue State, the police command also reiterated its commitment to protecting people and property and urged citizens to keep providing security agents with timely and helpful information.
