Jos Palm Sunday killings: Nigerian government responds, outlines next steps

The unfortunate event that took place on Palm Sunday in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North, has caused the Federal Government great concern. The government expressed its condolences to the victims’ relatives, the administration, and the people of Plateau State.

At a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation, said, “On behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Government of Nigeria, Iextend our deepest sympathies to the victims’ families as well as to the Plateau State government and populace.

“I want to reassure Nigerians that security agencies responded swiftly to the problem.Emergency calls prompted the quick deployment of troops under Operation Enduring Peace to the site.

In order to capture the perpetrators, the military and other security personnel secured the impacted region, took control of important entry points, and started focused search and clearance operations.

The minister stated, “These quick actions made sure that the situation was contained quickly and prevented any further escalation.”

This reaction, according to the Minister, is a component of a comprehensive and continuous Federal Government security structure in Plateau State and the larger North-Central area.

He added that in the wake of recent attacks, the Nigerian Armed Forces have been actively carrying out intelligence-driven missions and clearance operations in sensitive communities.

Together with better fast reaction tactics and integrated military-police patrols, increased monitoring and troop deployments have also been implemented in high-risk regions. The goal of these concerted efforts is to maintain stability and proactively neutralise threats, he continued.

His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, called a high-level conference with the country’s top security and intelligence authorities just hours ago in order to evaluate the situation and decide on more decisive steps to reach a long-term solution.

President Tinubu has invited Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, the Executive Governor of Plateau State, to continue the conversation and develop a concerted plan for long-term peace and security after this meeting, he said.

“These actions show how seriously the Federal Government is addressing this matter and how committed it is to ensuring that all necessary actions are carried out promptly and properly.

In cooperation with federal authorities, the Plateau State Government has also taken strong and complementary actions. In order to stabilise the security situation and support continuing activities, Jos North promptly implemented a 48-hour curfew.

To prevent retaliation, restore peace, and aid with investigations, the state government continues to work closely with security authorities.

In the past, localised security issues related to criminal activity and intercommunal conflicts have plagued Plateau State.

The current events are a criminal occurrence within a known conflict-prone territory, which the authorities are aggressively and resolutely addressing; they do not represent a collapse of national security.

“All security services have been instructed by the federal government to locate, apprehend, and prosecute the perpetrators of this horrible crime.

“Criminal elements will have nowhere to hide in Nigeria.” We are certain that those responsible for this attack will be held accountable, and ongoing operations are already producing actionable intelligence.
