FG Moves to Roll Out Nationwide 112 Emergency Number Across Nigeria

The Federal Government has directed relevant agencies to finalise the operational roadmap for the nationwide rollout of the single 112 emergency number, in a move aimed at making it easier for Nigerians to reach emergency responders.

A committee comprising the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Communications Commission, National Emergency Management Agency, Federal Road Safety Corps and other bodies has been constituted.

The goal is to replace fragmented emergency lines with one toll-free number that citizens can dial for police, fire, medical or other rapid-response needs.

Officials said the system will reduce confusion and speed up coordination among response agencies. Technical and training work is already under way.

Once fully activated, 112 is expected to function across all states with standardised protocols.

Public awareness campaigns will accompany the launch so that Nigerians know to use the new number in place of the older separate hotlines.

The rollout is expected to make emergency response more straightforward by giving citizens one number to remember during urgent situations, while the participating agencies will work through a more coordinated system for handling calls and deploying assistance.
