Akpabio Warns Political Violence Must Not Cost Nigerian Lives Ahead of 2027

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has warned political leaders and election aspirants against using violence, intimidation or force as part of the struggle for political power ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

Akpabio made the remarks at a public forum while speaking about the need for political actors and security agencies to protect Nigerians and maintain order as the country moves closer to another election cycle.

He stressed that political ambitions should not be allowed to place the lives of ordinary Nigerians at risk.

Warning Against Political Violence

The Senate President’s comments come at a time when political activity is increasing across Nigeria ahead of the 2027 elections.

Political parties are already preparing for primaries, selecting potential candidates and building structures ahead of the election season.

Historically, election periods in Nigeria have also been associated with concerns about political violence, intimidation and clashes between supporters of different parties.

Akpabio’s warning therefore focused on the need for politicians to conduct their activities without turning political competition into violence.

He also urged security agencies to maintain an environment where Nigerians can go about their daily lives without fear.

Why Election Violence Remains a Concern

Political violence can take different forms, ranging from threats and intimidation to clashes between supporters, attacks on political gatherings and destruction of property.

Such incidents can have consequences beyond the immediate political contest.

When people become afraid to attend political meetings, vote or move freely during elections, public participation can be affected.

Violence can also create additional pressure on security agencies and increase the cost of conducting elections.

For this reason, warnings against political violence are often made by political leaders and election stakeholders as elections approach.

Akpabio’s Message to Political Actors

The Senate President emphasised that no political prize should be considered more important than the life of a Nigerian.

His message was directed at political leaders and aspirants who may be involved in the competition for political offices.

The warning also extended to the security environment surrounding elections.

Political disagreements are expected in a democratic system, but disputes over candidates, parties and policies are expected to be handled through lawful political and electoral processes.

The courts and relevant electoral institutions also provide mechanisms for resolving disputes when disagreements arise.

2027 Political Activities Are Increasing

The 2027 general election is still ahead, but political activity has already begun to intensify.

Political parties are holding meetings, politicians are making alliances and aspirants are preparing for internal party contests.

As the election timetable progresses, the level of political mobilisation is expected to increase further.

This makes early attention to peaceful political participation important.

Political parties and their supporters will eventually need to campaign across communities, hold rallies and interact with voters.

Maintaining a peaceful environment during those activities will require cooperation from political parties, candidates, security agencies and citizens.

Security Agencies Also Have a Role

Akpabio’s remarks also placed attention on the responsibility of security agencies.

Security personnel are expected to protect lives and property while allowing citizens to exercise their rights peacefully.

During election periods, this can become more challenging because large crowds, competing political gatherings and heightened tensions can occur in the same locations.

Security agencies therefore have to balance public safety with the rights of citizens to participate in political activities.

What the Warning Means Ahead of 2027

Akpabio’s comments do not by themselves determine how political parties or supporters will behave during the election cycle.

Their significance lies in the broader call for political competition to remain peaceful.

Nigeria’s 2027 elections will involve multiple political parties, candidates and competing interests across the country’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

The ability of political actors to compete without violence will remain an important part of the wider electoral process.

For voters, the central issue is that political disagreements should be settled through lawful democratic channels rather than through threats or physical confrontation.

As the 2027 election season approaches, similar calls for peaceful participation are likely to continue from political leaders, electoral authorities, civil society organisations and security agencies.
