US Warns Nigerians Against Using AI-Edited Passport Photos for Visa and Passport Applications

The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a fresh advisory warning Nigerians not to use artificial intelligence (AI) or any digital editing tools to alter passport photographs submitted for US passport or visa-related applications.

According to the mission, passport photos that have been digitally enhanced, filtered, or modified using AI technology will not be accepted, as they must accurately represent the applicant’s current appearance.

The warning was shared through the mission’s official X account, where it reminded applicants to submit only authentic, unedited photographs.

“Reminder! Do NOT use AI or digital editing tools on your passport photo. We will not accept photos that are edited or filtered,” the mission stated.

AI-Edited Passport Photos Will Be Rejected

The US Mission explained that passport photographs must be taken within the last six months and should clearly reflect how the applicant currently looks.

Officials stressed that accurate photos are essential because they help officers from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) confirm the identity of travelers during screening and border inspections.

According to the advisory:

“Your photo should be recent (taken within the past six months) and look like you. The TSA or CBP agent must be able to tell it’s you.”

The mission emphasized that even slight digital alterations or beauty filters could make a passport photo unacceptable if they change a person’s natural appearance.

Digitally Altered Photos Could Delay Applications

Beyond outright rejection, the US Mission warned that submitting AI-generated or digitally edited passport photos could lead to unnecessary processing delays.

Applicants were advised to carefully review the official passport photo requirements before submitting any application to avoid avoidable setbacks.

The mission urged Nigerians to ensure that all passport photographs are genuine, recent, and free from AI enhancements, digital retouching, or filters that could affect facial recognition and identity verification.

With AI-powered editing tools becoming increasingly popular, the advisory serves as a reminder that official travel documents require authentic photographs that accurately match an applicant’s real-life appearance.
