Team Nigeria Shines at 2026 Commonwealth Games as Athletes Rewrite History with Record-Breaking Performances

Team Nigeria has delivered another remarkable showing at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, collecting 16 medals within the first eight days of competition while producing several history-making performances.

The Nigerian contingent has claimed eight gold, five silver, and three bronze medals, reinforcing the country’s reputation as one of Africa‘s strongest sporting nations. Beyond the medal haul, several athletes have broken Commonwealth Games and world records, making this one of Nigeria’s most memorable outings at the competition.

Record-Breaking Moments Put Nigeria in the Spotlight

Nigeria’s athletes have not only climbed the podium but also rewritten the record books across multiple events.

Para powerlifting champion Folashade Oluwafemiayo successfully defended her Commonwealth title in spectacular fashion by lifting 172kg, setting a new world record in the process.

Another standout performer was Goodness Nwachukwu, who captured gold in the women’s F42 para discus after throwing 39.66 metres. Her remarkable effort established both a new Commonwealth Games record and a new world record.

In para powerlifting, Rita Ferdinand also delivered a history-making performance. Her lift of 158kg, which earned 128.2 points, secured a place in the record books while adding another medal to Nigeria’s growing tally.

Meanwhile, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi produced a landmark achievement in athletics by throwing 21.07 metres to win the men’s shot put title, becoming the first Nigerian man ever to win Commonwealth Games gold in the event.

Nigeria Eyes More Success

With several medal events still remaining, Team Nigeria will be looking to extend its impressive medal haul and improve its position on the overall medals table.

The country’s athletes have continued to demonstrate excellence across para sports, weightlifting, athletics, and field events, giving fans plenty of reasons to be optimistic heading into the final stages of the Games.
