ADC crisis worsens as Binani-led faction exits Adamawa chapter

A strong group supporting Senator Aishatu Dahiru Ahmed Binani declared a mass resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Adamawa State, claiming what it called a “total collapse of internal democracy.” This has caused new divisions inside the party.

A significant political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections is indicated by the decision, which was stated in a communiqué released following a stakeholders’ meeting at Hon. Mijiyewa Umaru Kugama’s home.

The group, which was composed of representatives from each of the state’s three senatorial zones, charged that the national and state party leadership was imposing illegal structures and undermining democratic values.

The communiqué declared, “The party leadership’s actions have destroyed internal democracy, undermined the rule of law, and rendered the party structure in Adamawa State illegitimate and unacceptable.”

The recent party congresses, which stakeholders believe were tainted by manipulation and imposition under the direction of Ishaya Bauka (retd), are at the center of the crisis.

The group said that existing injunctions and court decisions were disregarded, resulting in what they called a “dangerous precedent of lawlessness.”

The stakeholders said that the congresses were “fundamentally flawed, manipulated, and imposed against the will of the majority of party members.”

They further claimed that the ADC has lost its legitimacy as a democratic platform in the state as a result of party officials’ “systematic exclusion, intimidation, and imposition” of important players.

The group announced its “immediate and irreversible resignation en masse” from the party and issued a vote of no confidence in the ADC leadership in a number of comprehensive resolutions.

Additionally, the party declared all of the contested congresses’ results to be “null and void.” The statement stated, “We refuse to be a part of a system that thrives on injustice, impunity, and illegality.”

Despite the lack of an official party name, the stakeholders indicated plans to unify under a new political platform. But before the next election cycle, they required Senator Binani to lead the changeover and develop a cohesive plan.

According to political analysts, the incident has the potential to drastically alter Adamawa’s political environment, especially as Binani is anticipated to continue playing a major role in the 2027 governorship contest.

In addition to strong grassroots mobilisation under a new platform, the communiqué described preparations for a coordinated defection structure spanning voting places, wards, and local government districts.

The stakeholders came to the conclusion that “this decision marks the beginning of a new political direction anchored on credibility, inclusiveness, and true democratic ideals.”

Analysts caution that unresolved internal conflicts might erode party cohesion ahead of upcoming elections, adding to the already rising tensions within opposition parties across the country.
