The Delta State Police Command has foiled a suspected cult initiation ceremony in Orogun Community, Ughelli North Local Government Area, recovering firearms, ammunition, vehicles, mobile phones, and suspected cult-related items during the operation.
The intelligence-led raid was carried out by operatives of the Command’s Quick Response Squad (QRS), who stormed a forest where suspected members of the Black Axe Confraternity, also known as Aye, were allegedly conducting an initiation ceremony.
Police Disrupt Suspected Black Axe Initiation Ceremony
According to the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the operation followed credible intelligence received in the early hours of Sunday, July 19, 2026.
He explained that the suspects were gathered inside a forest in Orogun Community for what was believed to be a cult initiation exercise when police operatives moved in.
However, upon noticing the approaching officers, the suspected cult members allegedly opened fire in an attempt to resist arrest.
The police responded with superior tactical force, forcing the suspects to flee into the surrounding forest along the Abbi–Abraka axis.
Firearms, Vehicles and Other Exhibits Recovered
After securing the area, the operatives conducted a thorough search of the forest and recovered several items believed to have been abandoned by the fleeing suspects.

The police confirmed that all recovered exhibits have been taken into custody as investigations continue.
Police Intensify Manhunt for Fleeing Suspects
SP Bright Edafe stated that efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest all suspects who escaped during the operation.
He reiterated that the Delta State Police Command remains committed to intelligence-driven policing and will continue targeting criminal groups involved in cult-related activities and other violent crimes across the state.
Delta Police Commissioner Commends Operatives
Following the successful operation, the Commissioner of Police in Delta State, CP Yemi John Oyeniyi, praised the Quick Response Squad for their swift and professional response.
He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to combating cultism, violent crimes, and other security threats through proactive intelligence gathering and coordinated operations.
The Commissioner also appealed to residents of Delta State to continue supporting law enforcement agencies by providing timely and credible information that can assist in preventing crime and improving public safety.
