Arise TV’s Rufai Oseni Breaks Down on Live TV Over Nigeria’s Growing Debt Crisis

Popular Arise TV presenter Rufai Oseni became emotional during Friday’s edition of The Morning Show as he lamented Nigeria’s worsening economic situation and the country’s rising debt burden.

The veteran broadcaster struggled to hold back tears while reflecting on how Nigeria transformed from a nation that once supported global financial institutions into one heavily dependent on borrowing.

Rufai Oseni Recalls Nigeria’s Financial Strength in the 1970s

During the live broadcast, Oseni said he was deeply saddened after revisiting Nigeria’s financial history, noting that the country was once strong enough to lend money to international organizations.

According to him, the contrast between Nigeria’s past economic position and its current debt profile is heartbreaking.

Speaking on the programme, he said:

“I cried for Nigeria this morning. Let me read something to you and show why I sometimes raise my voice about this country.

“On December 24, 1974, Nigeria signed a long-term borrowing agreement with the World Bank. Under that agreement, Nigeria provided $240 million in net resources to the World Bank Reserve.

“We were lending money to the World Bank to support development in other countries. We also lent $120 million to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). What happened to this country?”

Comments Come Amid Rising Concerns Over Nigeria’s Debt

Oseni’s emotional remarks come at a time when concerns continue to grow over Nigeria’s increasing debt profile.

The Federal Government has continued to secure loans to finance infrastructure projects, budget deficits, and other national expenditures. However, the growing debt has sparked debate among economists, financial experts, and many Nigerians who worry about the country’s long-term economic stability.

His comments have since generated widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians sharing similar concerns about inflation, the rising cost of living, and the nation’s economic direction.
