Eric Dane Biography, Age, Career, Wife, and Legacy

There are actors who become famous for one role and spend the rest of their careers trying to escape it. Eric Dane was famous for one role, Dr. Mark “McSteamy” Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy, but instead of running from it, he built on it and proved over and over that he had range, depth, and the kind of screen presence that keeps audiences watching no matter what character he’s playing.

Eric William Dane was born on November 9, 1972, in San Francisco, California. His father was an architect and interior designer, and his mother raised him and his younger brother after his father died by suicide when Eric was just seven years old.

That early trauma shaped much of his life, and he has spoken in interviews about the weight of losing a parent so young.

He attended Sequoia High School and graduated from San Mateo High School in 1991, where he played varsity water polo. His passion for acting was sparked during a high school production of Arthur Miller’s All My Sons. In 1993, he moved to Los Angeles with limited resources and started taking small guest roles on shows like Saved by the Bell, The Wonder Years, Roseanne, Married… with Children, and Charmed.

His breakthrough came when he joined Grey’s Anatomy in 2006 as Dr. Mark Sloan. The role made him a household name and turned him into one of the most popular characters in one of the most popular shows on television. He stayed with the show until 2012, appearing in 139 episodes total.

From there, he led The Last Ship from 2014 to 2018 and later took on one of his most challenging roles as Cal Jacobs in Euphoria from 2019 until his death in 2026.

His film career included X-Men: The Last Ship, Marley & Me, Valentine’s Day, Burlesque, and Bad Boys: Ride or Die in 2024.

Eric Dane was married to actress Rebecca Gayheart from October 2004. They filed for divorce in February 2018 after 14 years of marriage, but Rebecca withdrew the petition in March 2025 and they reconciled informally. They remained legally married at the time of his death. They had two daughters together — Billie Beatrice Dane, born in March 2010, and Georgia Geraldine Dane, born around 2011.

In April 2025, Eric publicly announced that he had been diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. The announcement shocked the entertainment world and his fans across the globe. His decline was rapid. By June 2025, he had lost use of his right arm and hand. By October 2025, he was in a wheelchair. He continued to advocate for ALS research and funding even as his health deteriorated.

On February 19, 2026, Eric Dane passed away at his home in Los Angeles at age 53 from complications of ALS. His death brought an outpouring of tributes from his Grey’s Anatomy castmates, the Euphoria cast, and fans worldwide.

A posthumous Netflix interview titled Famous Last Words was released on February 20, 2026, in which he reflected on his life, his addiction recovery, his love for his wife, and his final message to his daughters: live in the moment, cherish every second, choose friends wisely, love deeply, and stand up for your beliefs. “Good night. I love you,” he said to close the interview.

His estimated net worth at the time of his death was $7 million, which converts to approximately ₦9.4 billion in Nigerian naira.
