Motorists in Abuja and surrounding areas are facing another increase in petrol prices after several filling stations adjusted their pump rates upward.
The latest increase has pushed the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) to between ₦1,230 and ₦1,299 per litre at different filling stations across the Federal Capital Territory.
The development is coming just weeks after petrol prices dropped significantly following an earlier reduction in the price of petrol supplied by the Dangote Refinery.
MRS Raises Petrol Price to ₦1,230 Per Litre
Several MRS filling stations in Abuja have increased their petrol price from ₦1,210 to ₦1,230 per litre, representing a ₦20 increase.
The new price was observed at outlets around the Kubwa Expressway, Lugbe Expressway and other parts of the capital.
Other major filling stations have also adjusted their prices, although the exact pump price varies from one location to another.
Some outlets operated by NNPCL, Rainoil, Empire Energy and the Nigerian Independent Petroleum Company were reportedly selling petrol at prices ranging from ₦1,250 to ₦1,299 per litre.
For motorists, the difference means that filling up a vehicle now costs noticeably more, particularly for people who depend on their cars for daily movement across Abuja.
Why Petrol Prices Are Going Up Again
The latest adjustment follows an increase in the petrol gantry price of the Dangote Refinery.
The refinery reportedly raised its gantry price from ₦1,165 to ₦1,185 per litre, adding ₦20 to the price at which the product leaves the refinery.
A manager at one of the affected MRS stations said the outlet received instructions from the company’s headquarters in Lagos to increase its pump price by ₦20.
The manager said no specific reason was provided for the adjustment.
The development also comes as international crude oil prices have moved higher, with Brent crude trading above $94 per barrel.
Abuja Motorists Brace for Higher Transport Costs
The fresh petrol increase could put additional pressure on motorists and transport operators if the higher pump prices persist.
In Abuja, where many residents travel considerable distances between residential districts and workplaces, even a modest increase in petrol prices can quickly add to daily transportation expenses.
Commercial transport operators may also face higher operating costs, potentially putting pressure on fares if the situation continues.
The latest increase is particularly notable because it reverses part of the price relief Nigerians experienced in recent weeks, when several filling stations reduced petrol prices by at least ₦90 per litre following an earlier reduction in refinery supply prices.
With petrol prices now moving upward again, motorists will be watching closely to see whether the latest adjustment remains limited to certain outlets or spreads further across Abuja and other parts of the country.
