Lagos announces traffic diversion as Oke-Afa Bridge rehabilitation begins
Motorists using the Oke-Afa Bridge axis in Isolo, Lagos, will have to adjust their routes from Friday as rehabilitation work on the bridge gets underway.
The Lagos State Government has announced a temporary traffic diversion arrangement to manage movement around the bridge during the rehabilitation and reduce the disruption the work may cause for road users.
The rehabilitation of the Oke-Afa Bridge is expected to begin on Friday, August 28, 2026, and last for three weeks, with the work scheduled to end on Friday, September 18.
Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, announced the traffic plan in a statement issued on Monday.
According to him, the rehabilitation will be carried out in two phases to allow traffic to move while the work is ongoing.
The first phase will cover the outbound Isolo-to-Ejigbo section of the bridge and will run from August 28 to September 11.
The second phase will focus on the inbound Ejigbo-to-Isolo section and is scheduled for September 12 to September 18.
Oke-Afa Bridge to be closed during rehabilitation
As part of the traffic management plan, the Oke-Afa Bridge will be temporarily closed to vehicular traffic while rehabilitation work is being carried out.
Motorists will instead be directed to designated alternative routes depending on the direction they are travelling.
The diversion has been arranged in phases so that traffic can continue to move through the area despite the ongoing construction work.
Phase One: Isolo to Ejigbo
During the first phase, motorists travelling from Isolo towards Ejigbo will be diverted at Pako Roundabout.
The vehicles will move onto the Isolo-bound carriageway, where traffic will operate in both directions along the affected section of the bridge.
Motorists will then rejoin the main carriageway at Mobil Filling Station.
Vehicles travelling in the opposite direction, from Ejigbo towards Isolo, will continue to move freely.
However, they will share the carriageway with Ejigbo-bound motorists between Mobil Filling Station and Pako Roundabout.
After reaching the roundabout, motorists travelling from Ejigbo will regain unrestricted access to the road.
Phase Two: Ejigbo to Isolo
The traffic arrangement will change when the second phase begins on September 12.
Motorists travelling from Ejigbo towards Isolo will be diverted at Mobil Filling Station onto the Ejigbo-bound carriageway.
Traffic will operate in both directions along the affected section before motorists rejoin the main carriageway at Pako Roundabout.
Those approaching from Isolo will continue to have free movement, although they will share the carriageway with Isolo-bound traffic between Pako Roundabout and Mobil Filling Station.
Motorists will regain full access to the road after reaching the filling station.
LASTMA officials, tow vehicle to be deployed
The Lagos State Government said traffic officials would be stationed around the area throughout the rehabilitation period.
Osiyemi said officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, would be deployed to regulate traffic, guide motorists and help minimise delays around the affected routes.
An emergency tow vehicle will also be stationed within the area during the rehabilitation.
The vehicle will be available to respond to breakdowns and help remove vehicles that may become obstructive and worsen traffic around the diversion points.
The commissioner appealed to motorists to remain patient and cooperate with traffic officials throughout the period of the rehabilitation.
He explained that the temporary closure of the bridge was necessary to allow the rehabilitation work to be carried out.
Federal Ministry of Works handling project
The rehabilitation project is being undertaken by the Federal Ministry of Works through the Office of the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos.
The ministry is carrying out the project in partnership with Messrs. Strabic Construction Limited.
With the work expected to last for three weeks, the Lagos State Government urged motorists who regularly use the Oke-Afa Bridge and surrounding roads to plan their journeys ahead of time.
Motorists were also advised to follow the diversion arrangements and comply with instructions from traffic management officials throughout the rehabilitation period.
