Nigerian Woman Says Boyfriend Ended Their Relationship After She Was Diagnosed With Vitiligo

A Nigerian woman living with vitiligo has shared the emotional story of how her relationship reportedly came to an end shortly after she developed the skin condition.

Blessing Opeyemi Oduola revealed that she believes her former boyfriend walked away because of the visible changes in her appearance, adding that the experience became one of the most painful moments of her life.

Beyond the heartbreak, she also opened up about the misconceptions surrounding vitiligo in Nigeria, the emotional struggles she faced after her diagnosis, and how she has now embraced her condition while raising awareness for others.

White Patches Appeared Before Her Passing Out Parade

According to Blessing, everything started in 2024 while she was preparing to make her hair ahead of her Passing Out Parade (POP).

What first looked like a small injury on her scalp gradually developed into white patches that continued spreading across her skin.

At first, she believed the problem may have been caused by salon equipment or makeup products. However, after several medical consultations, doctors diagnosed her with vitiligo, an autoimmune skin condition that causes the loss of natural skin pigment.

Receiving the diagnosis marked the beginning of a difficult journey, both physically and emotionally.

‘He Said He Wasn’t Feeling the Vibe Again’

Blessing said her relationship also changed around the same period.

Although the couple officially started dating in January, she noticed her boyfriend gradually becoming distant after the changes in her skin became more noticeable.

Instead of discussing the issue openly, she said he slowly stopped communicating and avoided meaningful conversations.

Whenever she asked if something was wrong, she claimed he refused to give a direct answer.

Eventually, he ended the relationship, simply telling her that he was “not feeling the vibe again.”

Blessing believes her vitiligo played a major role in his decision to leave.

The breakup came while she was still struggling to process her diagnosis, making the emotional impact even more difficult to handle.

Emotional Stress Allegedly Made the Condition Worse

Blessing explained that the emotional pain from the failed relationship appeared to affect her recovery.

She said her treatment initially showed encouraging signs, with some of the affected areas beginning to regain their natural colour.

However, after going through the emotional stress caused by the breakup, the condition reportedly spread more rapidly.

She eventually stopped taking the medication after spending significant money on treatment without seeing the improvements she had hoped for.

Nigerians Still Misunderstand Vitiligo, She Says

Blessing also spoke about the stigma people living with vitiligo continue to face.

According to her, many strangers assumed she had survived a fire accident because of the white patches on her skin.

Others suggested she had used dangerous skin-lightening products, while some claimed her condition was linked to traditional beliefs or spiritual causes.

She rejected those claims, stressing that vitiligo is neither a curse nor the result of offending any deity.

Blessing explained that vitiligo is an autoimmune condition in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing skin pigment.

She also dismissed the widespread belief that the condition is always hereditary, urging Nigerians to seek accurate medical information instead of relying on myths.

From Hiding Her Skin to Inspiring Others

Blessing admitted that after developing vitiligo, she spent a long time trying to hide the white patches by wearing jeans, long sleeves, scarves and clothing that covered most of her body.

Over time, however, she decided she no longer wanted to live in fear of public opinion.

She said she has now accepted herself and is determined to educate others about the condition.

According to Blessing, she is currently in a new relationship with someone who accepts her completely.

She said her new partner sees her for who she is rather than focusing on her skin condition.

The experience has inspired her to become an advocate, using her voice to educate the public, challenge misinformation and encourage people living with vitiligo not to hide because of society’s judgment.

“I would not stop living. I will not hide. I will not shrink. I will keep making awareness,” she said.

What Is Vitiligo?

Vitiligo is a chronic autoimmune condition that causes certain areas of the skin to lose their natural pigment, leading to white patches on different parts of the body.

The condition is not contagious and is generally not life-threatening. However, many people living with vitiligo experience discrimination, emotional distress and low self-esteem due to widespread myths and social stigma.

Medical experts continue to encourage greater public awareness, early diagnosis and emotional support for individuals living with the condition.
