However, one of the biggest misconceptions is that Nigerians can apply directly from Nigeria or use military enlistment as a way to move to the United States.
That is not how the process works.
The U.S. Army does not recruit people living outside the United States who have no legal immigration status. It also does not sponsor visas for foreigners who wish to enlist.

Nigerians Cannot Join the U.S. Army Directly From Nigeria

If you are living in Nigeria without permanent residency in the United States, you are not eligible to enlist in the U.S. Army.
To qualify, you must be either:
- A U.S. citizen.
- A lawful permanent resident with a valid U.S. Green Card.
This means the U.S. Army is not an immigration pathway or a shortcut to obtaining a visa.

Applicants may also qualify with a GED certificate, although military recruitment standards for GED holders are often more competitive.

Every Applicant Must Pass the ASVAB Examination
Anyone seeking to join the U.S. Army must take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB).
The examination measures knowledge and ability in several areas, including:
- Mathematics
- Science
- Reading comprehension
- Technical reasoning
ASVAB scores determine not only whether an applicant qualifies for enlistment but also which military occupations are available to them. Some specialized career fields require significantly higher scores.
Medical Examination and Physical Fitness Are Mandatory

Applicants must also complete a medical examination at a Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) to determine whether they are medically fit for military service.

Every applicant undergoes a background investigation.
Certain criminal convictions, unresolved legal matters, or other disqualifying issues may prevent enlistment.
