Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Set for UK Return After Six Years in California
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are preparing to return to the United Kingdom with their two children, marking a major change for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex more than six years after they stepped back from royal duties and settled in the United States.
The couple are expected to relocate from California to a private, non-royal residence outside London later this month. Their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, are also expected to begin attending school in the UK in September.
Harry and Meghan to Begin a New Chapter in Britain
Harry and Meghan moved to California in 2020 after stepping down as senior working members of the Royal Family. Since then, they have built a life away from the institution, while continuing their business, media and charitable activities.
Their return does not signal a comeback to royal duties. The couple will remain private individuals and non-working members of the Royal Family, with no plans to resume official royal engagements.
The Sussexes are also expected to keep their Montecito home, meaning the UK move will not necessarily mark a permanent departure from their life in California.
King Charles Reportedly Welcomes the Family’s Return
King Charles III was informed about Harry and Meghan’s plans before the news became public and is reportedly pleased by the prospect of having more opportunities to spend time with his son and grandchildren.
The development comes after the Sussex family recently reunited with the King during a private family visit in Gloucestershire. The meeting was significant because it provided an opportunity for Charles to spend personal time with Archie and Lilibet after a lengthy period apart.
Despite the apparent improvement in relations between Harry and his father, the wider relationship between the Sussexes and the Royal Family remains complicated.
There is also no indication that Harry and Meghan will receive a formal role within the monarchy as part of their return.
Archie and Lilibet Expected to Start School in September
One of the biggest changes for the family will be the children’s education.
Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five, are expected to begin school in Britain in September after spending their early years in California. The exact school and the location of the family’s new home have not been publicly disclosed.
The decision gives the children an opportunity to spend more time in the country where their father grew up while also bringing them closer to members of the wider royal family.
Sussexes Will Keep Their California and Portugal Properties
Although Harry and Meghan are returning to Britain, reports indicate that they will retain their Montecito residence and their property in Portugal.
That arrangement has added to speculation that the UK relocation could be an extended stay rather than a permanent move.
For now, the couple appear to be establishing a second base in Britain while continuing their lives and commitments across both sides of the Atlantic.
Meghan is expected to continue working on her lifestyle business, while Harry will maintain his charitable commitments.
No Return to Royal Duties
The biggest point surrounding the move is that Harry and Meghan are not returning as working royals.
Their decision to step away from official royal responsibilities in 2020 remains unchanged. They will live privately and independently rather than take on public duties on behalf of the monarchy.
