Governor Otu Warns Cross River Traditional Rulers Over Community Violence
Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has warned traditional rulers across the state that they risk losing their official positions if they fail to maintain peace in their communities.
Otu issued the warning during the annual International Leboku Festival in Ugep, Yakurr Local Government Area, where he was represented by his Deputy Governor, Dr Peter Odey.
The governor expressed concern over the recent clashes between the Ugep and Idomi communities in Yakurr, which reportedly led to deaths and destruction of property.
He described the violence as a “show of shame”, saying the clashes had cast a shadow over a festival designed to promote unity, peace and cultural harmony among communities in the Yakurr Nation.
According to him, cancelling the Leboku Festival because of the conflict would have defeated its purpose, as the celebration is intended to strengthen relationships and encourage peaceful coexistence among the people.
Traditional Rulers Given Fresh Responsibility
Governor Otu reminded traditional rulers, clan heads and other recognised community leaders that maintaining peace is a major part of their responsibility.
He urged them to take proactive steps to prevent disputes from escalating into violence and to ensure that their communities respect established customs and traditions.
The governor warned that traditional rulers who fail to protect peace within their domains could have their staff of office withdrawn.
The warning places renewed responsibility on community leaders to intervene early in disputes and work with relevant authorities to prevent further clashes.
The Leboku Festival, one of Yakurr’s major cultural celebrations, continued despite the recent tension, with the state government stressing the importance of preserving the event as a platform for cultural unity and peaceful relations among communities.
