Chief Lekan Alabi Dies at 76 as Makinde, APC’s Alli Pay Emotional Tributes

Veteran journalist, respected public affairs analyst and Ibadan High Chief, Chief Lekan Alabi, has died at the age of 76, drawing heartfelt tributes from Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in the state, Sharafadeen Alli.
The elder statesman reportedly passed away in the early hours of Saturday, bringing an end to decades of service in journalism, public communication, and the preservation of Yoruba culture.
Until his death, Alabi held the revered traditional title of Abese Olubadan of Ibadanland. He also served as Chief Press Secretary to three former governors of Oyo State, earning widespread respect for his contributions to governance and media.
Makinde Says Oyo Has Lost One of Its Finest Sons
Reacting to the sad development, Governor Seyi Makinde described Alabi’s death as another painful loss for Oyo State, saying the late chief was among the state’s most distinguished sons.
The governor praised Alabi for his unwavering dedication to public service, cultural heritage, and truthful advocacy throughout his lifetime.
According to Makinde:
“His voice carried the weight of truth, his counsel was sought by leaders across generations, and his commitment to the preservation of Yoruba culture and values was unwavering. Oyo State has lost one of its finest sons.”
Makinde further described the late Ibadan chief as an outstanding public affairs analyst, respected elder statesman, cultural icon, and influential community leader whose impact would remain unforgettable.
Sharafadeen Alli Describes Death as Monumental Loss
APC governorship candidate Sharafadeen Alli also expressed deep sadness over Alabi’s passing, calling it a monumental loss not only to Ibadanland but to the entire Oyo State.
He noted that the deceased lived an exemplary life devoted to service, adding that his achievements and values would continue to inspire younger generations.
Alli said:
“His passing is a painful and irreplaceable loss. Ibadanland has lost a custodian of its history and values, while the journalism profession has lost one of its finest voices and most experienced practitioners.”
He added that Chief Alabi’s remarkable legacy would continue to shape both the journalism profession and society for many years to come.
