If I Had Seen a Balcony That Day, I Would Have Jumped – Davido Opens Up on Darkest Moment After Fame

Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Davido has spoken candidly about one of the darkest moments of his life, revealing that the overwhelming pressure of sudden fame once pushed him to the point of contemplating suicide.
The award-winning singer shared the emotional story during a recent appearance on the Vibe Podcast, where he reflected on how a private incident early in his career quickly spiraled into a public controversy that left him emotionally devastated.
Davido Recalls Private Hotel Incident That Changed Everything
According to Davido, the incident happened just a few months after his career skyrocketed, when his hit songs were dominating the charts and his popularity was growing rapidly across Africa.
The singer explained that after performing at a show in Ghana, he returned to his hotel with a woman he had met during the outing. What seemed like an ordinary night soon turned into a nightmare after the woman secretly took a photo of him while he was asleep and shared it online without his permission.
The post quickly spread across social media, triggering widespread reactions and drawing the attention of his family members.
Singer Says the Backlash Left Him Emotionally Broken
Davido admitted that he was still very young and inexperienced at the time, making it difficult for him to cope with the intense public scrutiny that came with fame.
Recalling the emotional toll of the incident, he said:
“The incident happened about two months after I became famous. I had two hit songs popping everywhere. We went to a show in Ghana and the reception was crazy. I was something new, and every week we were climbing higher on the charts.
“We went to the club, and I was excited to see how much the ladies loved me. It was my first time taking a lady to my hotel room. We had a great night, and I fell asleep.
“Suddenly, I heard loud knocks on my door. It was my manager telling me to calm down. I didn’t understand what was happening.
“It turned out that the lady had posted a photo of me sleeping. My dad was calling me. My sisters were calling me. If I had seen a balcony that day, I would have jumped. I was young, and I liked women too much.”
Experience Changed His Approach to Fame
Looking back, Davido said the incident became a major turning point in his life.
He explained that the experience taught him valuable lessons about protecting his privacy, safeguarding his public image, and setting clear personal boundaries as a celebrity.
The Afrobeats star noted that growing older and gaining more experience helped him better understand the responsibilities that come with being in the public eye.
His emotional revelation has since sparked conversations among fans about the mental health challenges celebrities often face behind the scenes, despite their success and public image.
