A deadly bandit attack along the Gummi–Sokoto Road in Zamfara State has left one person dead, another seriously injured, while 11 abducted travellers were rescued following a rapid security operation.
The attack occurred around 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday when heavily armed bandits ambushed a trailer transporting vegetables and passengers along the busy highway.
According to the Zamfara State Police Command, the gunmen opened fire on the moving vehicle, forcing the driver to lose control before the trailer veered off the road.
One Passenger Killed, Another Injured
Authorities confirmed that Dan Fati Umar, a resident of Gidan Ganja in Bukuyum Local Government Area, lost his life during the attack after being hit by gunfire.
Another passenger sustained severe injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital.
The police also confirmed that several passengers were kidnapped during the ambush, although the exact number of those initially taken was not disclosed.
Security Forces Rescue 11 Kidnapped Victims
Following the attack, police officers, working alongside other security personnel, launched an immediate rescue operation.
The operation led to the successful rescue of 11 kidnapped travellers, who were safely reunited with their families shortly after the incident.
Security operatives are continuing efforts to track down the fleeing attackers and locate any remaining victims.
Police Commissioner Reacts
The Commissioner of Police in Zamfara State, Ahmad Muhammad Bello, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured passenger a quick recovery.
He also reiterated the command’s commitment to combating banditry and protecting residents across the state.
The police further appealed to members of the public to continue providing timely and credible information that could assist security agencies in preventing attacks and dismantling criminal networks operating within the state.
Bandit attacks have remained a major security challenge across parts of Zamfara and neighbouring states, with highways frequently targeted by armed groups carrying out kidnappings and deadly assaults on commuters.
