Three Chinese Nationals, Others Arrested in Nasarawa Illegal Mining Crackdown
Security operatives in Nasarawa State have arrested three Chinese nationals and several suspected artisanal miners during a major crackdown on alleged illegal mining activities in Amba Community, Kokona Local Government Area.
The operation was led by the state’s Deputy Governor, Emmanuel Akabe, following reports that mining activities had continued despite an existing government suspension order.
Security Raid Targets Illegal Mining Site
The enforcement team stormed the mining location in Amba Community, where several suspects were apprehended for allegedly carrying out unauthorized mining operations.
During the raid, security personnel recovered cartons containing suspected mineral resources alongside equipment believed to have been used for the mining activities.
Authorities also seized CCTV cameras and other operational devices reportedly installed at the site to monitor activities and support the illegal operation.
Deputy Governor Condemns Violation of Government Order
Speaking after the operation, Deputy Governor Emmanuel Akabe said he personally led the raid after receiving repeated reports that mining activities were still ongoing despite the state’s suspension directive.
According to him, the visit was necessary to verify the situation firsthand, adding that he was disappointed to discover that the government’s order had allegedly been ignored.
Akabe questioned how foreign nationals without the required legal documentation were able to engage in mining activities within the state, stressing that the government would not tolerate illegal business operations.
He maintained that the state remains committed to enforcing the law and ensuring that all commercial activities comply with legal requirements.
State Raises Concerns Over Community Agreements
The deputy governor explained that although mining falls under the exclusive legislative powers of the Federal Government, the Nasarawa State Government has a responsibility to protect local communities and maintain law and order.
He further disclosed that there was reportedly no corporate social responsibility (CSR) agreement or environmental impact assessment between the mining operators and the host community before exploration began.
Akabe warned that anyone found guilty after investigations would face prosecution in accordance with the law.
He also reaffirmed that all mining activities at the disputed locations remain suspended until ongoing legal disputes surrounding the sites are resolved.
Arrested Chinese Nationals Speak
The three Chinese nationals, who spoke through an interpreter, reportedly told authorities that they had been operating at the mining site since last year.
They claimed they were working on behalf of senior officials based in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
Authorities confirmed that investigations are still ongoing to determine the full extent of the alleged illegal mining activities.
Officials added that anyone found culpable after the investigation would be prosecuted in line with existing laws.
