R. Kelly Seeks Donald Trump’s Clemency to Cut 31-Year Prison Sentence

R&B singer R. Kelly has officially asked U.S. President Donald Trump to reduce his 31-year federal prison sentence by filing a request for executive clemency with the U.S. Department of Justice.
The request, which recently appeared in newly released federal court records, is for a commutation of sentence rather than a full presidential pardon. The application is currently under review as part of the federal clemency process, with no decision announced yet.
Clemency Request Now Under Federal Review
Robert Sylvester Kelly, widely known as R. Kelly, is serving his sentence at a federal correctional facility in North Carolina after being convicted in multiple federal criminal cases involving racketeering, sex trafficking, child enticement, and the production of child sexual abuse material.
His legal team is hoping the clemency request will convince President Trump to shorten the remainder of his prison term, although the process could take time and there is no guarantee the request will be approved.
How R. Kelly Received a 31-Year Prison Sentence
Kelly’s prison term stems from two separate federal convictions.
In 2021, a federal jury found the 59-year-old singer guilty of operating a criminal enterprise that prosecutors said recruited women and underage girls for sexual exploitation and the production of sexually explicit material. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison for those offenses.
The following year, Kelly was convicted in another federal case involving child sexual abuse material and child enticement. Although he received an additional 20-year sentence, most of that term runs concurrently with his earlier sentence, leaving him with one extra year, bringing his total prison sentence to 31 years.
Based on current prison records, Kelly is not expected to be released until January 2046.
| Case | Outcome |
|---|---|
| 2021 Federal Trial | Convicted of racketeering and sex trafficking; sentenced to 30 years |
| 2022 Federal Trial | Convicted on child enticement and child sexual abuse material charges; received a 20-year sentence, largely concurrent |
| Total Sentence | 31 years in federal prison |
| Projected Release | January 2046 |
Lawyer Continues Push for Early Release
Kelly’s attorney, Beau Brindley, has spent more than a year urging President Trump to intervene in the case.
In 2025, Brindley filed an emergency court motion seeking Kelly’s transfer to home detention, arguing that the singer’s life was at risk while in federal custody.
The filing alleged that three prison officials were involved in a plan that would have allowed a terminally ill inmate to attack Kelly in exchange for early release. However, the court rejected the request, allowing Kelly to remain in federal prison.
Despite that setback, Brindley has continued pressing for a reduction of Kelly’s sentence through executive clemency.
R. Kelly Maintains His Innocence
Throughout the legal proceedings and after his convictions, R. Kelly has consistently denied the allegations against him.
His legal team continues to argue that his sentence should be reduced, while the federal government maintains the convictions and prison term imposed by the courts.
With the clemency application now pending before the Department of Justice, attention will turn to whether President Donald Trump ultimately decides to act on the request.
