In advance of a scheduled enforcement action intended to restore environmental order in the area, the Lagos State Taskforce has issued a 72-hour ultimatum to street vendors and unauthorised squatters operating along the Alaba Rago section of the Mile 2–Badagry Motorway.

Adetayo Akerele, the chairman of the Lagos State Taskforce, issued this demand on Wednesday in Lagos.

According to Akerele, the operation is a part of continuous efforts to uphold environmental sanity throughout the city by enforcing the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law and other rules.

He added that inhabitants, visitors entering the nation by the Seme border, drivers, walkers, and environmental stakeholders have all complained about the corridor’s ongoing unlawful commerce and environmental infractions.

He claimed that the proposed operation will address the growth of improvised stores, illicit buildings, miniature brothels, used plastic depots, careless garbage disposal, uncontrolled commerce, and other environmental violations impacting the region.

“Given the extent of illicit activity and environmental risks in this area, Lagos State cannot pretend or ignore them.” This state of affairs is not typical of a contemporary megacity.

Akerele stated, “The time has come to correct these abnormalities and enforce the laws.”
