Burna Boy Becomes Africa’s Best-Selling Artist in the Streaming Era, Surpasses Wizkid

Grammy-winning Nigerian superstar Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has officially become the best-selling African artist of all time in the modern streaming era, overtaking fellow Nigerian music icon Wizkid.

The latest global music consumption data compiled by ChartMasters shows Burna Boy leading all African artists with more than 14.46 million Equivalent Album Sales (EAS) worldwide. The achievement reflects the combined performance of his albums, singles, and streams across major digital platforms.

Wizkid, who previously held the top position among African artists in the streaming era, now ranks second with approximately 14.4 million equivalent album sales, placing him just behind Burna Boy in the updated rankings.

The milestone further cements Burna Boy’s position as one of Africa’s most commercially successful artists, following years of global chart success, sold-out international tours, and multiple hit records.

While Burna Boy now leads the streaming-era rankings, Algerian music legend Cheb Khaled continues to hold the overall historical record based on traditional career sales estimates, with approximately 81 million records sold worldwide, largely driven by physical album sales accumulated over several decades.

Burna Boy Breaks Another Major YouTube Music Record

Burna Boy has also achieved another historic milestone by becoming the first African artist to surpass 800 million monthly listeners on YouTube Music.

The record highlights his rapidly expanding global audience and reinforces his dominance across major digital streaming platforms. The achievement comes amid continued international success, with Burna Boy’s music maintaining strong performance across multiple markets around the world.

His latest accomplishments further strengthen Nigeria’s influence on the global music industry, as African artists continue to reach new commercial heights through streaming platforms and international audiences.
