Ex-Kano LG Chairman Returns to Tailoring After Losing Office, Says Politics Should Never Be a Career

Former Chairman of Kumbotso Local Government Area in Kano State, Abdullahi Gali Shitu, popularly known as Comrade Abdullahi Gali Basaf, has returned to his tailoring business months after a court removed him from office.

The former council chairman says his decision is proof that politicians should never depend entirely on public office for survival, stressing that every public servant should have a sustainable profession or business outside politics.

Court Judgment Ended His Tenure

Basaf’s time as chairman came to an end in March 2026 after the Kano State High Court nullified his Certificate of Return.

The court declared Ali Musa, popularly known as Hardworker, as the duly elected chairman of Kumbotso Local Government Area, effectively bringing Basaf’s tenure to an end.

Rather than remain inactive after leaving office, the former chairman returned to the tailoring profession he practiced long before venturing into politics.

Tailoring Helped Fund His Political Journey

Speaking about his return to the trade, Basaf explained that tailoring has been his primary source of income for more than a decade and played a major role in supporting his political ambitions.

According to him, the business provided the financial stability needed to fund campaigns and other political activities without relying solely on government positions.

He emphasized that tailoring is a respected profession capable of providing a steady income and creating employment opportunities.

“Tailoring is not a small trade. It is a major one. It sustains livelihoods. Even in politics, my tailoring business helped me financially to support my campaigns and organisations. Without it, it would have been impossible to sustain political activities.”

Building a Bigger Business After Politics

Basaf currently operates a tailoring workshop in Sheka Ward, Kumbotso Local Government Area, where he oversees around 20 apprentices learning the trade.

He revealed plans to transform the workshop into a modern garment manufacturing company capable of employing at least 50 people as part of his contribution to job creation and economic development.

According to him, expanding the business will not only improve local production but also create more opportunities for young people interested in vocational careers.

Encourages Young Nigerians to Learn Skills

The former local government chairman urged Nigerian youths to acquire practical vocational skills instead of relying solely on politics or waiting for white-collar jobs.

He noted that political positions are temporary and can change unexpectedly, while a professional skill can provide financial security throughout life.

Basaf maintained that learning a trade offers long-term stability, enables individuals to support their families, and allows them to contribute meaningfully to society.

Despite returning to tailoring, he stated that he has no intention of abandoning politics and will continue participating in political activities while managing his growing business.
