A political disagreement involving FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has dominated headlines as political activity builds ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The immediate issue is Wike’s Rainbow Coalition and concerns among APC governors about political alliances or structures that could operate separately from the ruling party’s established structure.
The APC Governors Forum said its members would not support or endorse an alliance or political arrangement capable of weakening the APC or adversely affecting candidates of the party.
The position came after a meeting of APC governors, with Imo State Governor and Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, Hope Uzodimma, announcing the governors’ position.
Wike Responds
Wike, on the other hand, has maintained that the Rainbow Coalition is focused on mobilising support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.
He also said he never promised that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, would not field candidates in the elections, making a distinction between supporting Tinubu through the coalition and the participation of PDP candidates in elections.
The disagreement therefore centres on how the coalition should operate and whether political structures outside the APC could affect the party’s plans ahead of 2027.
Wike’s position and that of the APC governors have now become part of the wider political conversation surrounding alliances, party structures and the coming general elections.
With the 2027 elections still ahead, party leaders and political actors are expected to continue negotiating these differences.
For now, the latest exchange shows that the relationship between Wike’s Rainbow Coalition and the APC’s established political structure remains an issue attracting significant attention as preparations for 2027 gather pace.
