Troops Foil ISWAP Mass Abduction Attempt at Borno School, 46 Students Rescued

A coordinated security operation by troops of Operation HADIN KAI and personnel of the Nigeria Police Mobile Force (MOPOL) has successfully foiled an attempted mass abduction by suspected ISWAP terrorists at the Federal Government Girls College (FGGC), Monguno, in Borno State.

The overnight attack, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday, was swiftly repelled, leading to the rescue of 46 students who were staying at the facility.

Terrorists Storm Temporary Student Hostel

The attack reportedly happened at about 1:30 a.m. on July 19, 2026, when suspected fighters linked to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) attempted to invade the school.

Although the institution is a Federal Government Girls College, it is currently serving as a temporary hostel for students of the Federal Polytechnic, Monguno, under an arrangement by the Borno State Government.

According to military authorities, the gunmen attempted to abduct the students but were met with immediate resistance from security personnel stationed at the school.

Security Forces Respond Swiftly

Soldiers guarding the facility quickly engaged the attackers with sustained gunfire, preventing them from gaining access to the students.

The response was further reinforced by the Sector 3 Quick Reaction Force (QRF) of Operation HADIN KAI, which arrived at the scene within minutes to support the ongoing operation.

Faced with overwhelming resistance, the terrorists reportedly abandoned their mission and fled the area without successfully kidnapping any of the students.

46 Students Evacuated to Safety

Following the operation, security personnel evacuated all 46 rescued students to Kinnasara Barracks in Monguno, where they received medical examinations and immediate care.

Military officials confirmed that all rescued students were found to be medically stable after undergoing health assessments.

School Buildings Damaged During Gun Battle

While the security operation successfully prevented a mass abduction, parts of the school sustained damage during the exchange of gunfire between troops and the fleeing terrorists.

Authorities said the attack could have resulted in a much larger tragedy if security forces had not responded swiftly.

Stray Bullets Claim Lives During Escape

Despite the successful rescue operation, the military confirmed that the incident ended on a tragic note.

Some students reportedly lost their lives after being struck by stray bullets fired by the fleeing terrorists during the intense firefight.

The exact number of casualties has not yet been officially disclosed.

Security Operations Continue Across Borno

The attempted attack highlights the continued security threats posed by insurgent groups operating in parts of northeastern Nigeria.

Operation HADIN KAI has continued to intensify military operations across Borno and surrounding states in a bid to prevent attacks on communities, schools, and other public facilities.
