Seun Kuti Says Public Clash With Wizkid Helped Defend Fela’s Legacy
Seun Kuti has revealed that his highly publicized online disagreement with Nigerian music star Wizkid was worthwhile, saying the controversy helped him defend the legacy of his late father, Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
The singer made the remarks during an appearance on the TV program Your View, where he spoke on a special segment titled Inside the Mind of Seun Anikulapo-Kuti.
According to Seun, his exchange with Wizkid was never about creating unnecessary drama but about protecting the ideals and reputation of Fela, whom he believes should not be celebrated publicly while being undermined behind the scenes.
Seun Kuti Says Disagreement With Wizkid Had a Purpose
During the interview, Seun was asked whether he believed his disagreement with Wizkid achieved anything.
Responding, he insisted that it did.
“I think it achieved a lot. The point I’m trying to make is that it’s still not acceptable for one to claim to be aligned with the ideals of someone while the same person’s team consciously works to drag that person’s name down. That doesn’t make sense to me.”
His comments come months after the social media clash between both musicians sparked widespread debate over Fela’s legacy and his influence on modern Afrobeats.

Rather than offering a direct opinion, Seun suggested the television station should invite VeryDarkMan to explain his own position.
When asked if VDM was fighting to liberate Nigeria, Seun replied:
“You can invite him for an interview and ask him. He said he’s not political, that he’s doing charity.”
He avoided making further comments on the matter.

Seun was also asked whether he considers himself arrogant.
Rejecting the suggestion, he said his confidence comes from knowledge rather than pride.
“I don’t think I’m arrogant because the authority is that of knowledge, so I can’t put it to myself.”
