Police Arrest Four Over Brutal Mob Killing of 21-Year-Old Man, Exhume Body for Autopsy

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested four suspects in connection with the brutal mob killing of a 21-year-old man, Emmanuel Effiong, whose body was allegedly buried in a shallow grave in an attempt to conceal the crime.

Police said the victim was beaten to death after being accused of stealing chickens and eggs from a poultry farm in Mbak 4 Community, Uyo Local Government Area.

Police Launch Investigation After Viral Video Emerges

According to a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, the investigation began after the police received credible intelligence on June 17, 2026, regarding the killing.

The case gained widespread attention after a disturbing video circulated online showing the victim lying in a pool of blood with his hands and legs tied before being dragged along the ground beside a white Mitsubishi pick-up van.

The footage prompted detectives to launch a detailed investigation, which eventually led to the arrest of four principal suspects.

Victim Allegedly Killed Instead of Being Handed to Police

Investigators revealed that Emmanuel Effiong had allegedly been accused of stealing poultry and eggs from a farm in Mbak 4 Community.

Rather than reporting the alleged theft to the police, the suspects allegedly took the law into their own hands.

According to the police, the victim was attacked on April 19, 2026, with sticks and machetes before he eventually died from the injuries sustained during the assault.

Suspects Allegedly Dragged and Secretly Buried the Body

Police said the suspects allegedly tied the victim’s hands and legs before dragging him through the community to a nearby junction, where his body was abandoned for approximately two days.

Investigators further alleged that the suspects later transported the corpse using a wheelbarrow into a nearby forest, where it was buried in a shallow grave in an attempt to hide evidence of the killing.

During interrogation, the four suspects reportedly confessed to their individual roles in the incident and led detectives to the burial site.

The victim’s remains have since been exhumed and deposited at the morgue for an autopsy.

Police Recover Vehicle, Weapons and Other Evidence

As part of the ongoing investigation, officers recovered several items believed to have been used during the incident.

The recovered exhibits include:

• A white Mitsubishi pick-up van allegedly used during the attack.
• A wheelbarrow reportedly used to transport the victim’s body.
• Weapons allegedly used in carrying out the fatal assault.

Police said the investigation is still ongoing, while the suspects are expected to face prosecution upon the conclusion of inquiries.

Police Warn Against Jungle Justice

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command reiterated its warning against jungle justice, stressing that anyone accused of committing a crime should be handed over to law enforcement authorities for proper investigation and prosecution.

The command maintained that taking the law into one’s own hands is a criminal offence and urged residents to always allow the justice system to handle criminal allegations.
