Peter Obi’s Benue Visit Turns Tense as Convoy Comes Under Attack

Suspected thugs and youths attacked the convoy of Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi in Benue State on Tuesday, creating a tense scene during his visit to the state.
Videos circulating online show crowds blocking the road and chanting for him to turn back. Police confirmed the incident and said an investigation has started.
Obi later explained that the visit was meant to sympathise with residents affected by insecurity.
Former Kano governor Rabiu Kwankwaso condemned the attack and described himself as deeply disturbed.
The presidency, through special adviser Daniel Bwala, criticised Obi for attending a campaign event linked to another opposition figure the previous day.
Local politicians traded accusations over who organised the disruption, with the incident quickly becoming another point of political tension.
The episode adds fresh tension to the early stages of the 2027 contest and raises questions about campaign safety in the North-Central region, particularly as political activities begin to intensify ahead of the election.
