Lagos Blue Line Railway Records More Than 400,000 Riders Since Launch

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) reports that its Blue Line rail service has transported more than 400,000 passengers since its launch as the state continues to expand its urban rail network.

Managing Director Abimbola Akinajo stated that the Blue Line was operating 52 trips daily and could increase its passenger numbers further following the commencement of Phase 2.

The expansion is expected to move from Mile 2 towards Okoko, with interim stops planned around areas including FESTAC, Alakija and LASU.

Blue Line Expansion Plans

Talks are also underway concerning a possible extension of the rail network towards Ogun State.

The proposed expansion would provide another connection for residents travelling between Lagos and parts of Ogun State, particularly along the Lagos-Abeokuta corridor.

The Red Line is also expected to increase its operations and trip frequencies following the procurement of additional trains.

Passenger rail is a viable alternative for many Lagos residents who currently rely heavily on road transportation.

Lagos is known for severe road congestion, and rail services can provide another option for commuters travelling across densely populated parts of the state.

Rail Network Could Connect More Communities

If the Blue Line maintains regular services and expands its coverage, it could become an increasingly important part of Lagos’ public transportation system.

The longer-term expansion of the Blue Line and Red Line into additional areas could also improve connectivity between Lagos and neighbouring communities.

However, maintaining reliable schedules, sufficient train capacity, station infrastructure and passenger safety will remain important as the number of riders increases.

With more than 400,000 passengers already recorded since launch, the Blue Line has established a growing passenger base, while its next phase will determine how much further the service can expand across Lagos and potentially into Ogun State.
