Hayden Panettiere, ‘Heroes’ and ‘Nashville’ Star, Dies at 36

American actress Hayden Panettiere, best known for her memorable roles in Heroes, Nashville and the Scream franchise, has died at the age of 36.

Panettiere’s death was confirmed by her father, Skip Panettiere, in a statement released after the actress was found unresponsive at an apartment complex in Greenville, South Carolina, on August 16, 2026. Emergency responders attempted to revive her, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her family described her as an “incredible light” and a “force of nature,” while asking for privacy as they deal with the loss.

Hayden Panettiere’s Cause of Death Remains Under Investigation

Authorities have not yet announced an official cause of death.

Police said there were no initial signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances. Reports from emergency dispatch have mentioned a possible overdose and cardiac arrest, but those details have not been confirmed as the official cause of death. An autopsy found no signs of trauma, while toxicology testing remains pending.

The circumstances surrounding her final hours are therefore still being investigated, and officials have yet to establish exactly what caused her death.

From Child Star to ‘Heroes’ Breakthrough

Panettiere began working in entertainment as a child and built a career that stretched across television and film for more than three decades.

Her major breakthrough came in 2006 when she was cast as Claire Bennet in NBC’s science-fiction drama Heroes. Her character, a seemingly ordinary cheerleader with extraordinary regenerative abilities, quickly became one of the show’s most recognisable figures.

The role turned Panettiere into a major television star and made her one of the defining young actresses of the era.

‘Nashville’ Made Her a Different Kind of Star

Panettiere later took on another career-defining role as Juliette Barnes in the musical drama Nashville.

Her performance as the ambitious country singer allowed her to showcase both her acting and singing abilities. The role earned her two Golden Globe nominations and helped establish her as a versatile performer beyond the supernatural drama that first made her famous.

Her Film Career Included ‘Scream’ and ‘Remember the Titans’

Away from television, Panettiere appeared in several well-known films.

Her early credits included Remember the Titans, Ice Princess and Raising Helen. She later appeared as Kirby Reed in Scream 4 and reprised the character years later in Scream VI.

She also provided the voice of Dot in A Bug’s Life and appeared in projects including Bring It On: All or Nothing, Racing Stripes and I Love You, Beth Cooper.

Panettiere Opened Up About Her Personal Struggles

Despite her success, Panettiere was also candid about some of the difficult periods in her life.

Following the birth of her daughter, Kaya, in 2014, she publicly discussed her experience with postpartum depression. She also spoke about alcohol addiction, anxiety and the pressures that came with growing up in Hollywood.

In her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, released in 2026, Panettiere shared deeply personal details about motherhood, addiction, relationships, depression and the challenges she faced away from the spotlight.

Her openness helped make her personal story an important part of the public conversation surrounding her career.

A Career Cut Short at 36

Panettiere remained active in entertainment and had spoken publicly about plans for the next stage of her career just months before her death. She had discussed ambitions that included working behind the camera and developing new creative projects.

Her death has since prompted an outpouring of tributes from former co-stars, friends and fellow entertainers, many remembering her not only for her performances but also for the warmth and determination she showed throughout her life.

Panettiere is survived by her daughter, Kaya.

From her early days as a child performer to her breakout as Claire Bennet in Heroes and her acclaimed run as Juliette Barnes in Nashville, Hayden Panettiere leaves behind a body of work that made her one of the most recognisable faces of American television.
