Christopher Musa Says Every Nigerian Should Experience Military Training

Minister of Defence, retired General Christopher Musa, has sparked a fresh social media debate after suggesting that every Nigerian should experience military training.
Musa made the comments while discussing the sacrifices and difficult conditions experienced by members of the Nigerian military. He said military training exposes people to hunger, exhaustion and physical strain and can help them understand endurance and the realities faced by soldiers.
The comments have received mixed reactions across social media, with users debating whether wider military training would be beneficial for Nigerians or whether such an approach would be unsuitable for civilians.
Some users argued that military-style training could encourage discipline, resilience and a stronger understanding of national security. Others questioned the practicality of making military training compulsory in a country already dealing with several security and economic challenges.
The discussion has mainly taken place on X, Instagram and other social platforms, with younger Nigerians also sharing jokes about whether everyday life in Nigeria already provides enough hardship and “training.”
Musa’s comments were made in the broader context of defending the sacrifices of Nigerian soldiers and encouraging greater public understanding of the conditions under which military personnel operate.
The debate has therefore moved beyond the original clip, with Nigerians discussing national discipline, military service, civilian life and whether some form of structured national service could play a role in building resilience among young people.
