Fear and uncertainty continue to spread across several communities in Benue State following another wave of deadly attacks blamed on suspected armed herders.

The latest violence has hit communities in Benue South Senatorial District, particularly in Otukpo and Ohimini Local Government Areas, leaving dozens of people dead, many injured, and thousands forced to flee their homes.

Residents say the attacks have become increasingly frequent, with many accusing authorities of failing to provide adequate security despite repeated warnings.

Nearly 60 Feared Killed in Renewed Violence Across Benue South

Recent attacks across Benue South have reportedly claimed close to 60 lives, making it one of the deadliest periods the region has witnessed in recent months.

Otukpo Local Government Area has suffered the worst of the violence, with families mourning loved ones while many communities remain deserted as frightened residents seek safety elsewhere.

The killings also triggered widespread outrage, with angry youths carrying the bodies of victims to the palace of the Och’Idoma, the traditional ruler of the Idoma people, during a protest demanding urgent government intervention.

Many residents believe the latest violence may be connected to the June 26 killing of the Benue State Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Alhaji Ardo Risku Mohammed, and his associate, Yakubu Isa.

Some community members recalled that shortly after the incident, a man believed to be of Fulani origin allegedly circulated a video threatening that Benue people would “regret” the killing.

Deadly Attacks Sweep Through Otukpo Communities

The violence began with an attack on Akpachi village in the Ugboju community of Otukpo Local Government Area.

According to local reports, suspected armed attackers invaded the village, killing two residents and leaving several others with gunshot injuries.

Less than 24 hours later, another assault struck Otukpo Nobi, where eight more people were reportedly killed while several others sustained injuries.

The back-to-back attacks deepened fears across surrounding communities, forcing many families to abandon their homes.

Residents Flee as Another Community Comes Under Attack

Barely two days after the Otukpo killings, panic spread again when armed men reportedly invaded Ondo community in Ugboju, Otukpo Local Government Area.

Residents said the attackers stormed the area during the early hours of the day and opened fire indiscriminately.

The gunfire forced entire families to flee into nearby bushes and neighboring communities, leaving homes and personal belongings behind.

Many displaced residents have yet to return, fearing another attack.

Fresh Assault Hits Ohimini Community

The violence later spread to Ankpechi community in Oglewu Ward, Ohimini Local Government Area.

Witnesses said armed men arrived between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., firing repeatedly into the community and causing widespread panic.

Shops and provision stores were reportedly looted as traders and customers ran for safety.

The Chairman of Ohimini Local Government Area, Gabriel Adole, confirmed the incident, stating that one resident sustained gunshot injuries while the attackers were believed to be suspected armed herders.

The latest attack further heightened security concerns along the busy Otukpo-Oweto-Abuja Road corridor.

Idoma Groups Demand Immediate Federal Intervention

Growing frustration over the killings has prompted Idoma groups at home and abroad to call for urgent action.

The Idoma Association in the United States appealed to President Bola Tinubu to urgently intervene and halt the continued attacks across Benue South.

The association described the violence as a prolonged campaign that has devastated Idoma communities for more than a decade.

According to the group, many innocent residents have continued to lose their lives while countless others have been displaced without lasting solutions to the crisis.

Idoma Community in the UK Calls for Justice

The Idoma Community United Kingdom (ICUK) also condemned the attacks, urging the Benue State Government to work closely with security agencies to identify, arrest and prosecute everyone responsible.

Following an emergency meeting, the diaspora organization stressed that those behind the repeated attacks must face justice to prevent further bloodshed.

The group also expressed concern over the growing humanitarian situation facing displaced families.

Survivors Recount Heartbreaking Losses

Residents who survived the attacks described horrifying scenes of violence and loss.

One protester, Ojima Inalegwu, said she lost her only sister and two young children during the attack on Otukpo Nobi.

Speaking through tears, she questioned when the killings would finally end, saying many residents now feel abandoned by both the federal and state governments.

Another resident, Anebi Ogwu, recounted how a three-year-old child was reportedly killed while being carried on the back of a fleeing mother.

He also claimed that a seven-year-old child sweeping outside a local church in the early hours of the morning was shot dead, while an elderly community leader nearing 90 years old sustained gunshot wounds during the attack.

According to him, earlier threats circulating online should have prompted stronger preventive security measures before the violence escalated.

Residents Criticise Local Leaders Over Silence

Another resident, identified simply as Olotu, criticised political leaders across Benue South, accusing them of remaining largely silent despite the growing death toll.

He argued that while public officials were quick to condemn the killing of the state’s MACBAN chairman, they have not shown the same urgency following the deaths of dozens of Idoma residents.

The comments reflect increasing frustration among locals who say repeated attacks have become a disturbing pattern across several communities.

Humanitarian Crisis Deepens

Beyond the loss of lives, the attacks have left hundreds of families displaced.

Many residents have abandoned their homes, farms and businesses, while children and elderly people continue to seek shelter in safer locations.

Community leaders and humanitarian observers warn that unless security improves quickly, more villages could face similar attacks, worsening the already fragile humanitarian situation in Benue South.

The repeated violence has also disrupted economic activities and increased anxiety among residents who fear further attacks could happen without warning.
