BAT Group Names AGF Fagbemi Grand Patron

The Bola Ahmed Tinubu Ideological Group, popularly known as BAT Ideology, has formally appointed the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Olasunkanmi Fagbemi, SAN, as its Grand Patron.

The announcement was made public on Saturday, September 5, 2026, through reports carried by national newspapers and quickly amplified on X by supporters and critics alike.

The group, which positions itself as a platform for advancing the political philosophy associated with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, described the appointment as recognition of Fagbemi’s contributions to the administration’s legal and reform agenda.

The move has drawn mixed reactions in political circles. Fagbemi, who assumed office in 2023, has overseen several high-profile legal matters, including electoral disputes and institutional reforms.

Supporters of the appointment argue that placing a serving Attorney-General in such a role strengthens the ideological backbone of the ruling All Progressives Congress and signals continuity as the 2027 election cycle gathers momentum.

Critics, however, question the appropriateness of a sitting justice minister accepting a partisan ideological title, suggesting it blurs the line between official duty and political advocacy.

BAT Ideology has been active in organising seminars, youth outreach and media campaigns that promote what it calls the Tinubu school of progressive politics.

By elevating Fagbemi, the group appears to be consolidating influence within the legal community at a time when opposition parties are also realigning.

Recent statements from figures linked to the Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi camps have already framed the 2027 contest in stark terms, with Peter Obi declaring in Port Harcourt that he is prepared to defend the integrity of the vote even at personal cost.

Against that backdrop, the Grand Patron announcement lands as a deliberate signal of internal cohesion.

Some legal practitioners have noted that previous Attorneys-General maintained stricter distance from purely political associations while in office. Fagbemi’s acceptance of the role, if confirmed by official channels, could set a new precedent.

The Tinubu administration has faced sustained scrutiny over security appointments and economic management, with online commentary frequently targeting the concentration of power. The BAT Ideology decision therefore feeds into broader debates about how the ruling party is preparing for the next electoral battle.

Information circulating among political correspondents indicates that the group plans further engagements in the coming weeks, including policy dialogues that will feature the new Grand Patron.

Whether the appointment translates into tangible legal or legislative outcomes remains to be seen. For now, however, it has already become one of the more discussed federal government-related political stories of the day, adding another layer to the growing political activity ahead of 2027.
