
Nigerian Army troops have successfully repelled an attempted terrorist attack on the Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Mayanchi, Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State, preventing the attackers from overrunning the military facility and ensuring the continued safety of the strategic Sokoto–Gusau highway.
According to reports, the terrorists launched the assault in a coordinated attempt to infiltrate the military base but were met with a swift response from troops stationed at the facility.
Terrorists Launch Coordinated Assault on Military Base
Security reports revealed that the attack occurred at approximately 5:05 p.m. on July 18, when suspected terrorists riding on motorcycles stormed the Forward Operating Base in Mayanchi.
The attackers reportedly attempted to overrun the military installation, but soldiers immediately engaged them in a fierce exchange of gunfire, preventing them from advancing into the camp.
Reinforcements Arrive as Soldiers Force Attackers to Retreat
As the attack intensified, additional troops from the Forward Operating Base in Fangaltama were deployed to reinforce the defending soldiers.
The combined military response overwhelmed the attackers, forcing them to abandon the operation and retreat without breaching the military base or causing significant damage.
The successful defence highlighted the military’s readiness to respond rapidly to emerging security threats in the state.
Sokoto–Gusau Highway Remains Safe
Military sources noted that the operation ensured the continued security of the Sokoto–Gusau Main Supply Route, a vital corridor used for both military logistics and civilian transportation.
By preventing the terrorists from disrupting activities along the highway, troops maintained the free movement of residents, commercial vehicles, and security personnel operating within the region.
Military Sustains Pressure on Armed Groups in Zamfara
The successful operation is part of ongoing counter-terrorism efforts aimed at weakening armed groups operating across Zamfara State.
Security authorities continue to intensify military operations to deny terrorists freedom of movement, protect communities, and secure major roads and strategic installations across the state.
