Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey Faces Harsh Criticism From Translator Who Inspired the Film

Christopher Nolan’s latest blockbuster, The Odyssey, has earned widespread praise from critics and audiences around the world. However, one of the people most closely connected to the story has delivered a surprisingly harsh verdict.
Emily Wilson, the acclaimed scholar whose 2017 English translation of Homer’s Odyssey helped inspire Nolan’s adaptation, has openly criticized the film, calling its script deeply disappointing despite acknowledging its positive impact on public interest in classical literature.
Emily Wilson Says the Film’s Writing Falls Short
Wilson did not hold back in her assessment of the Oscar-winning director’s latest project.
She described the screenplay as something she “would be ashamed to have written,” arguing that the film relies on flashy storytelling rather than meaningful character development.
According to Wilson, the movie’s narrative structure feels gimmicky, while its dialogue and storytelling lack the emotional weight expected from one of history’s greatest literary works.
She also criticized the film for offering little psychological, political, or ethical depth, saying the characters rarely display believable motivations for their decisions.
Wilson even joked about smaller details, noting that there were no intimate scenes and that “all the food looks horrible,” adding to her overall disappointment with the production.
Nolan’s Spectacle Impresses, But the Story Doesn’t
While acknowledging Christopher Nolan’s talent for creating visually stunning films, Wilson argued that The Odyssey focuses too heavily on spectacle instead of substance.
She said she had hoped the legendary Greek epic would inspire Nolan to create more layered and believable characters.
Instead, she believes the film repeats many of the director’s familiar habits, combining grand visuals with underdeveloped storytelling.
Wilson wrote that although the movie succeeds in delivering breathtaking action sequences, massive battles, and mythical giants, it struggles to explore the deeper themes that have kept Homer’s poem relevant for centuries.
Family-Friendly Entertainment, But Missing Emotional Depth
Despite her criticism, Wilson admitted the film still provides entertaining cinema.
She revealed that her teenage children enjoyed watching the blockbuster, describing it as a visually exciting experience suitable for families.
However, she compared its storytelling to a large fireworks display, spectacular to watch but lacking emotional impact.
Wilson also expressed disappointment with the film’s female characters.
Although Nolan includes more women than many of his previous films thanks to the original source material, she believes most of them have very little to say compared to their richer portrayals in Homer’s poem.
Nolan Previously Praised Wilson’s Translation
Before the film’s release, Christopher Nolan openly acknowledged the influence of Wilson’s acclaimed translation.
During promotional interviews, the director revealed that the opening line of her version of The Odyssey, “Tell me about a complicated man”, served as an important guide while shaping Matt Damon’s portrayal of Odysseus.
Wilson’s translation has been widely praised since its publication for offering a fresh and modern interpretation of the ancient Greek classic.
Critics Continue to Celebrate The Odyssey
While Wilson’s review has sparked discussion, it remains very much a minority opinion among professional film critics.
Since arriving in cinemas earlier this month, The Odyssey has received overwhelming acclaim, with many reviewers describing it as one of Christopher Nolan’s finest achievements.
The film also marks Nolan’s first major release since the Academy Award-winning success of Oppenheimer, which dominated the Oscars and won Best Picture.
Star-Studded Cast Brings the Ancient Epic to Life
The historical fantasy features an impressive ensemble cast led by Matt Damon as Odysseus.
Other major stars include:
- Zendaya
- Tom Holland
- Anne Hathaway
- Robert Pattinson
- Charlize Theron
- Lupita Nyong’o
The story follows Odysseus, the King of Ithaca, as he embarks on his dangerous journey home after the Trojan War, battling mythical creatures, powerful gods, and impossible challenges in an effort to reunite with his wife Penelope and their son Telemachus.
A Film Winning Praise While Dividing Literary Experts
Although The Odyssey continues to dominate cinemas and attract glowing reviews, Emily Wilson’s criticism highlights the ongoing debate over adapting beloved literary classics for modern audiences.
For many moviegoers, Nolan has delivered another cinematic spectacle. For Wilson, however, the film misses the emotional richness, complexity, and humanity that made Homer’s epic endure for thousands of years.
Even so, she acknowledged one positive outcome: the blockbuster has encouraged more people to discover and read The Odyssey, helping breathe new life into one of literature’s greatest works.
