Fernando Santos Backs Real Madrid’s Bernardo Silva Signing, Says Midfielder Is Still Among the World’s Best

Former Portugal head coach Fernando Santos has praised Real Madrid’s decision to sign Bernardo Silva, insisting the veteran midfielder remains one of the finest players in world football despite questions about his age.

Silva completed a free transfer to the Spanish giants last month after bringing an end to his successful spell at Manchester City.

The 31-year-old arrives at the Santiago Bernabéu following nine memorable seasons with City, where he established himself as one of the club’s most influential players. During his time in England, Silva scored 76 goals in 460 appearances across all competitions and helped the club win 19 major trophies, including six Premier League titles.

Santos, who managed Portugal between 2014 and 2022, spoke highly of Silva’s football intelligence and personality, describing him as one of the best professionals he has ever coached.

According to the former Portugal manager, Silva’s understanding of the game places him in a category shared by only a handful of elite players.

“As a footballer, Bernardo Silva is well-known. He possesses immense quality and perceives the game in a way that very few players can. His standards as a player are exceptionally high, making it challenging to equate his on-field prowess with his character, yet in his case, it holds true.

“He is attentive, courteous, kind, and consistently wears a smile. On a personal and human level, he ranks among the finest footballers I have encountered throughout my career. Real Madrid has acquired a phenomenon in every aspect.”

Santos Rejects Age Concerns Over Real Madrid Midfielder

With Silva now 31, some critics have questioned whether Real Madrid signed him too late in his career. However, Santos firmly dismissed those concerns, insisting the midfielder is still performing at an elite level.

The experienced coach said Silva remains at the peak of his career and believes he has several top seasons still ahead of him.

“Based on my observations this season at City, I would assert that he remains at his best. I know him very well, and I am confident that he has many excellent years ahead.

“He is still at the pinnacle of his career, and he will demonstrate that. In my opinion, he remains one of the best in the world. I believe Real Madrid made a wise decision in signing him, and he will significantly contribute to the team.”

Silva heads to Madrid after enjoying another trophy-winning campaign with Manchester City. Although Pep Guardiola’s side lifted silverware, they surrendered the Premier League title to Arsenal before the midfielder’s departure.

On the international stage, Silva also represented Portugal at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Portugal’s journey ended in the Round of 16 after a narrow 1-0 defeat to eventual champions Spain, with Silva coming close to forcing extra time after heading a late chance over the crossbar.

The Portuguese playmaker has signed a two-year contract with Real Madrid and is expected to add creativity, experience and versatility to Carlo Ancelotti’s squad as Los Blancos prepare for the new campaign.
