Gov Eno sets up committee to tackle electricity challenges in Akwa Ibom

Pastor Umo Eno, the governor of Akwa Ibom State, has formed a committee made up of members of the State Executive Council and chairmen of local governments to devise a clear plan that would guarantee a consistent and dependable supply of electricity throughout the state.
Shortly after a combined State Exco and local government chairmen meeting with the governor, Dr. Aniekan Umanah, the Commissioner for Information, revealed this to journalists in Uyo.
According to him, the governor assigned the committee the job of reviewing current reforms in the power sector and outlining doable measures to establish electricity ownership and commercialisation in the state.
“After discussions at the Power Summit in September 2025 at Four Points by Sheraton, Uyo, the committee is expected to evaluate power sector reforms, harmonise proposals, and develop a clear pathway for achieving steady electricity supply within a reasonable time-frame.”
Additionally, the Commissioner implied that presentations on solar and sustainable energy solutions were given by specialists and technical consultants.
Iniobong Robinson, the Commissioner for Power, stated that recent changes enable states to autonomously produce, distribute, and manage power while advising citizens to exercise patience as the committee works.
Uwemedimo Udo, the state’s ALGON chairman, praised the governor’s proposal and said that inadequate electricity supply is a typical problem impeding economic progress. He promised that local governments would continue to work together to support reforms and safeguard vital infrastructure.
The 2023 Electricity Act decentralised power generation and distribution, enabling state-level electricity markets, according to Mr. Eyo Ekpo, the state’s electrical sector reform expert.
Because of its gas resources, power plants, transmission assets, and present distribution system run by Port Harcourt Distribution Company, which is anticipated to become a state-controlled organization, Akwa Ibom has a significant potential for sustainable electricity supply. Additionally, when generation, distribution, finance, and bill payment are managed effectively, power can be produced locally.
