Ghana to offer visa-free access to all African nationals

Ghana Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that all African passport holders will be able to enter the country without a visa, making it the fifth country in Africa to do so. According to Business Insider, the new regulation will go into effect on May 25, 2026, which is also Africa Day.
The declaration, which was made during Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s state visit, expands on a previous initiative by former President Nana Akufo-Addo, who promised visa-free travel for Africans in January 2025 will see the last State of the Nation Address..
However, that effort was not implemented prior to the conclusion of his government.
Ghana now joins Benin, The Gambia, Rwanda, and the Seychelles as the only African nations that grant admission to all African nationals without a visa under the revised framework. The reform significantly alters Ghana’s immigration and travel laws by doing away with the need for pre-arrival visas.
Next month, Ghana’s new e-visa system, which promises to expedite entry procedures while ensuring strong border security, will launch in tandem with the visa-free arrangement.
In addition to fostering tourism and intra-African trade, the strategy upholds Ghana’s historical position as the birthplace of Pan-Africanism, according to Foreign Affairs Minister Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa. Ghana has expanded travel options for Ghanaian passport holders by negotiating 23 visa waiver agreements for its residents since 2025.
The provision of visa-free entrance for Africans is expected to improve mobility, increase leisure and business travel, and help regional integration initiatives under frameworks like the African Continental Free Trade Area, or AfCFTA.
