Transportation Minister Alkali resigns to chase Gombe governorship ambition

In order to pursue his goal of becoming governor of Gombe State prior to the 2027 general elections, Saidu Ahmed Alkali resigned from his post as Minister of Transportation. After meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa on Tuesday, Alkali declared his resignation.
Ibrahim Kana, the Permanent Secretary of the General Services Office, and Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), signed a circular confirming the occurrence.
The instruction “followed the provisions of Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, as well as the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for party primaries ahead of the 2027 election,” according to the circular.
The letter claims that the resignation complies with President Tinubu’s order that cabinet officials running for office must resign before taking part in party primary.
Alkali, a former senator from Gombe North, is now the third member of the Federal Executive Council to step down in accordance with the order.
