Wike vs APC Governors: Tinubu Moves to Broker Truce Ahead of 2027

The political disagreement between Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike and governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has intensified ahead of the 2027 general elections, with President Bola Tinubu now expected to intervene in an attempt to calm the situation.
The development comes as Wike continues to promote his Rainbow Coalition, a political platform he has described as a vehicle for mobilising support for President Tinubu’s re-election while allowing politicians to maintain their positions in other elections. APC governors, however, have rejected political arrangements they believe could weaken the party or affect its candidates in the 2027 elections.
According to reports, President Tinubu, who is currently on holiday in France, may engage the two sides in an effort to resolve their differences. A senior presidential aide familiar with the matter said the President was expected to intervene and that the meeting could take place abroad before his return to Nigeria.
Why Wike and APC Governors Are Clashing
The disagreement centres largely on the role of Wike’s Rainbow Coalition and whether political support for Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election should automatically translate into support for APC candidates in governorship, senatorial and other elections.
Wike has maintained that his support is specifically for President Tinubu and does not mean that members of his political structure must support every APC candidate. His position has brought him into direct disagreement with APC governors, particularly those who insist that the party’s official structures and candidates should remain the focus of the 2027 campaign.
Following a meeting of APC governors in Abuja, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma said the governors would not support political alliances capable of weakening the APC, undermining the President’s re-election or adversely affecting APC candidates. Wike subsequently pushed back against the position, saying he was not answerable to APC governors.
Wike also took particular aim at Uzodimma, questioning the APC governor’s record in Imo State during the 2023 presidential election. According to the official results cited in recent reporting, Tinubu polled 66,171 votes in Imo, while Labour Party candidate Peter Obi won the state with 352,904 votes. Wike used the figures to question why APC governors were challenging his political activities when some of them had struggled to deliver the President’s votes in their own states.
Wike Defends His Rainbow Coalition
Wike has repeatedly defended the Rainbow Coalition as a separate political arrangement rather than an APC structure. He has argued that politicians from different parties can work together to support Tinubu at the presidential level while still allowing their individual parties to participate in other elections.
The former Rivers State governor has also pointed to Rivers and Bayelsa as important parts of the political calculations in the South-South. Speaking recently, Wike said the Rainbow Coalition had helped bring what he described as greater political stability to Rivers State. He also claimed that members of the PDP in Bayelsa were working for Tinubu.
However, the APC governors appear concerned that such cross-party arrangements could create confusion for their candidates and weaken the party’s campaign structure ahead of 2027.
The disagreement therefore goes beyond a personal exchange between Wike and individual governors. It touches on how political alliances will operate ahead of the next presidential election and whether support for Tinubu will be organised mainly through the APC or through wider political networks such as the Rainbow Coalition.
Tinubu’s Planned Intervention
The reported intervention by Tinubu comes as both sides continue to defend their positions.
A senior presidential aide told PUNCH that the President was expected to engage the parties in a bid to resolve their differences. The aide said the intervention could take place while Tinubu is abroad, with the President currently on vacation in France.
The development has placed renewed attention on the relationship between Wike and the APC political structure. Wike remains a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party but currently serves as FCT Minister under Tinubu’s APC-led administration. His continued support for Tinubu has therefore created an unusual political arrangement ahead of the 2027 elections.
For the APC governors, the priority is maintaining the party’s candidates and political structures across the states. For Wike, the emphasis has been on building a broader coalition of politicians who can support Tinubu at the presidential level regardless of their party affiliations in other contests.
The South-South Factor
The South-South remains an important part of the political calculations surrounding the 2027 election, particularly because of Wike’s influence and his political relationships in the region.
Wike has argued that his political network can help mobilise support for Tinubu beyond the traditional APC structure. He specifically mentioned Bayelsa State when discussing areas where the President could receive support from politicians outside the APC.
At the same time, APC governors are seeking to protect their own party structures and candidates as preparations for the 2027 elections gradually gather pace.
The coming weeks could therefore determine whether the disagreement remains a political argument between Wike and the governors or develops into a wider dispute within the President’s support network.
For now, President Tinubu’s expected intervention is being viewed as an attempt to prevent the disagreement from becoming a bigger political problem before the 2027 election preparations move into a more intense phase. Whether the two sides can reach an understanding over the Rainbow Coalition, APC candidates and the broader campaign structure remains to be seen.
