Troops Kill 18 Terrorists After Tumbunma Baba Meeting Disrupted

Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have killed at least eighteen terrorists after disrupting an alleged meeting of suspected high-profile insurgents in Tumbunma Baba, Borno State.

According to military sources, the operation was in response to intelligence indicating the presence of mid-level commanders and fighters at the meeting. The skirmish began immediately after the location was identified, and the number of terrorists was confirmed after the terrain had been secured.

As it is the case with most of the recent operations in the North-East, the Tumbunma Baba offensive fits into a pattern of pressure being mounted to prevent reorganisation of the insurgency.

Witnesses in the surrounding villages said they could hear gunfire from the engagement before it was over. The military has been open about its efforts to disrupt the command chain structure of the groups to reduce their capacity to attack soft-skills in future.

Security analysts note that while the removal of mid-level commanders and fighters will cause logistical challenges, the motivations that led to the insurgency are still in place.

Family members of those killed in the crossfire were only partly consoled by the news that an immediate threat had been removed. However, they understand that the overall situation in the region remains precarious due to the presence of other cells.

The latest counter-insurgency operation is another addition to the list of successes announced by the theatre commander on a regular basis. However, during private meetings with community leaders, security officials have warned that constant vigilance is required to prevent pockets of resistance from re-emerging and melting back into the civilian population.

The Tumbunma Baba encounter is typical of the current style of counter-insurgency operations being conducted by the military.

It is preferable to engagements that cause large-scale displacements of civilians from their homes.

Local residents who have been living under the threat of the insurgency for over ten years are evaluating each new development within the context of a long ordeal.

Meanwhile, the military maintains that local intelligence is vital in operations against the insurgents.

As the dry season begins, security officers and civilians are preparing for changes to the patterns of insurgent activity.

The latest encounter fits into a series of operations that have been launched by the military in Borno State. The question now is whether intensified intelligence-led operations will be sufficient to prevent the region from becoming a rallying point once again for terrorist commanders and fighters.
