Liya: Why I left DMW label

Abdulsalam Suliyat Modasola, better known by her stage name Liya, is a Nigerian singer who has disclosed that she left the Davido Music Worldwide (DMW) label because she wanted to advance both personally and professionally.

In October 2020, Liya became the first female artist signed to Davido record label. In 2023, the label formally broke up with Liya.

In an interview with Josy Anne on the show Wahala, the singer revealed that the emotional difficulties she faced while working for the label had a big impact on her welfare.

She claims that the time was characterised by weariness, depression, and health issues, which finally forced her to make the tough choice to leave.

“Why did I depart? All I wanted was more, both personally and artistically.

Liya remarked, “It was a decision that I had to make for myself, even though it was sad, depressing, tired, and sick.”

The singer also talked about the criticism she received from the public when she joined with the label, pointing out that many people misinterpreted her circumstances and thought she was unproductive.

“People called me derogatory names and that she was incompetent and lazy. She said, “They’re just giving her money and she’s doing nothing.”

Liya went on to say that her social media presence was impacted by the difficulties she encountered at the time. She clarified that she has delegated management of her Instagram account to her manager for over two years.

The singer thanked her management for his tolerance and encouragement over the time, despite the challenges. “I’m so happy he understood, even if he was exhausted. He never coerced or pushed me,” she continued.

After joining DMW in 2020 and releasing songs like “Melo,” “Adua,” and “Lakiriboto,” Liya became popular.
