Wande Coal: Don Jazzy Didn’t Make Me Successful, God Did — Singer
Nigerian singer Wande Coal has pushed back against the popular narrative that his success in the Nigerian music industry was largely the result of his relationship with music executive Don Jazzy.
The singer acknowledged the important role they played together but maintained that his achievements cannot be credited to one person. According to him, his success is ultimately a result of God’s grace and the collaboration between two talented individuals.
Wande Coal Gives God Credit for His Success
Speaking during an interview with Channels TV, Wande Coal explained that while Don Jazzy helped provide an opportunity for him early in his career, he does not believe the producer and label executive alone made him successful.
“God is the reason for my success. I give all the credits to him because he was the one who brought me out and made me successful.”
Addressing claims that Don Jazzy was solely responsible for bringing him into the spotlight, the singer said their success came from working together.
“Some people say it was Don Jazzy that brought me out but I feel like it was just two talented people working together to achieve success. So, it’s not by one man. It’s God.”
How Don Jazzy Discovered Wande Coal
Wande Coal’s journey to becoming one of Nigeria’s most respected singers began in 2006 when he was discovered by Don Jazzy and D’banj after performing at a campus event at the University of Lagos.
Following the meeting, he was signed to Mo’ Hits Records, the label founded by Don Jazzy and D’banj.
His career quickly gained momentum, particularly after he featured prominently on several tracks on Mo’ Hits’ 2007 compilation album, Curriculum Vitae.
‘Mushin 2 Mo’Hits’ Turned Wande Coal Into a Major Star
Wande Coal further established himself as one of Nigeria’s leading young music stars with the release of his debut album, Mushin 2 Mo’Hits, in 2009.
The project became a major milestone in his career and helped cement his reputation for his distinctive vocals and songwriting ability.
His rise also coincided with the growing influence of Mo’ Hits Records, which at the time was one of the biggest forces in Nigeria’s music industry.
Wande Coal Later Joined Mavin Records
Following the highly publicised split between Don Jazzy and D’banj in 2012, Wande Coal moved with Don Jazzy to his newly established record label, Mavin Records.
However, his time with the label was relatively brief.
Wande Coal left Mavin Records in 2013 and subsequently established his own music label, Black Diamond Entertainment, marking another major step toward building his career independently.
His latest comments highlight his view that although key figures helped shape his journey, his success was the result of talent, collaboration, opportunity and, above all, his faith in God.
