Catherine O’Hara Biography, Age, Career, Husband, and Legacy

Catherine O’Hara spent five decades making people laugh, cry, and feel things they didn’t expect to feel from comedy. She was one of those rare performers who could do physical comedy, character work, voice acting, and heartfelt drama all at the same level of excellence. And she did it all without ever chasing fame for its own sake.
Catherine Anne O’Hara was born on March 4, 1954, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, the sixth of seven children in a large Irish-Catholic family. Her father, Marcus Charles O’Hara, worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway, and her mother, Margaret Ann O’Hara, was a real estate agent. She grew up in Etobicoke and attended Burnhamthorpe Collegiate Institute, graduating in 1974.
She started her career humbly as a waitress at Toronto’s Second City improv theater before becoming an understudy for Gilda Radner and eventually joining the cast full-time in 1974. Her time at Second City led to SCTV from 1976 to 1984, where she won a Primetime Emmy for writing in 1982.
From there, she transitioned into film and became a favorite of directors like Tim Burton and Christopher Guest. She played Delia Deetz in Beetlejuice in 1988 and reprised the role in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice in 2024. She played Kate McCallister, the frantic mother in Home Alone in 1990 and Home Alone 2 in 1992. She was Sally the ragdoll in The Nightmare Before Christmas in 1993 and appeared in Christopher Guest mockumentaries like Best in Show and A Mighty Wind.

Her career resurgence came with Schitt’s Creek from 2015 to 2020, where she played Moira Rose and swept major awards in the final season — Emmy, Golden Globe, SAG, and Critics’ Choice. Her work in 2024 and 2025 included The Last of Us Season 2 and The Studio on Apple TV+, both of which earned her Emmy nominations.
Catherine O’Hara was married to production designer and director Bo Welch from April 1992 until her death. They met on the set of Beetlejuice in 1988 and had two sons together — Matthew Welch, born in 1994, and Luke Welch, born in 1997. Both sons work behind the scenes in Hollywood.
On January 30, 2026, Catherine O’Hara passed away at Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, California, at the age of 71. The cause of death was listed as pulmonary embolism with rectal cancer as the underlying factor. She had been experiencing breathing difficulties at her Brentwood home before being taken to the hospital.
Her death brought tributes from across the entertainment world, including Macaulay Culkin, Eugene Levy, Pedro Pascal, Seth Rogen, Meryl Streep, and Rita Wilson. A private Catholic funeral mass was held on February 14, 2026.
