Basic Guide to Extending Your Phone’s Battery Lifespan Long-Term

A smartphone battery gradually loses capacity as it goes through charging cycles and experiences heat and other forms of stress. While battery aging cannot be stopped completely, everyday charging habits and temperature management can help maintain battery performance for longer.

Keep Your Phone Cool

The biggest threat to battery lifespan is high temperature, so it is important to avoid leaving a phone in direct sunlight or a closed car where it could become excessively hot.

Heat can place additional stress on a smartphone battery, particularly when the phone is also being charged or performing demanding tasks.

Avoid making a habit of allowing the battery to repeatedly reach extremely low or high charge levels. Keeping the battery somewhere around the middle of its charging range when practical can help reduce unnecessary stress.

Use Optimized Charging

It is best to avoid situations that cause unnecessary heat while charging. Modern smartphones often include an “optimized battery charging” or similar feature, which can be found in the settings of many devices.

When available, this feature should be enabled. It can allow the phone to manage charging based on the owner’s estimated daily schedule, reducing the amount of time the battery spends at a very high charge level.

There is no need to follow an excessively strict charging routine, but avoiding extreme temperatures and unnecessary full charging cycles can be useful for long-term battery care.

Check Battery-Using Apps

Background processes and applications that continually refresh information, such as news or messenger apps, can consume battery power throughout the day.

Checking battery usage under the phone’s settings will show which applications are using the most power. Apps that consume excessive background power can be restricted, have background refresh disabled, or be removed if they are not necessary.

Managing background activity can improve everyday battery life and reduce the need for frequent charging.

Good charging habits, temperature control, and regular monitoring of battery usage can help keep a smartphone battery performing reliably for longer.
