Appeal Court Upholds 490-Year Sentence for Ex-NEXIM Bank Boss Robert Orya

The Court of Appeal has upheld the 490-year jail sentence handed to former Managing Director of the Nigerian Export-Import Bank, Robert Orya, in a N2.4 billion fraud case.

The appellate justices dismissed the arguments raised against the conviction and confirmed the trial court’s findings.

Orya was found guilty on multiple counts relating to the mismanagement of funds. The decision closes one chapter of a long-running prosecution that drew significant public attention.

Anti-corruption agencies described the affirmation as a boost to accountability in the public financial sector.

Orya’s legal team is yet to indicate whether a further appeal to the Supreme Court will be pursued.

The case remains one of the longer aggregate sentences recorded in recent financial-crime prosecutions, while the latest ruling reinforces the existing conviction unless further legal action is taken.
